The Brit List - August 2021

avatar

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I use Python with beem (by @holger80) in a script to generate what you see here. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

Flag
Logo by @barge

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry.

Previous editions

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

  • Active as above.
  • Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
  • Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location.

Commentary

The number of active users has dropped again this month with the biggest change being in the south east, whilst some areas have better numers. People have other things going on, so activity will vary. Some may be away at this time of year. It is still an improvement on a few months ago.

The good news is that we found twelve people who joined up in the last month and a few others who we just had not tracked down before. I have about 450 in my master list. There have been a couple of businesses who created an account with a single post to advertise themselves. Maybe they hope to get some SEO benefit from this, but it would be great if they can find reasons to be more active.

Our best hope is that people get friends to sign up. Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool and we just need to reach some critical mass for it to really explode. We already have pretty active hubs in various locations. We need to get some meetups organised. Those can be great to introduce new users to some of the community. If you know people with active accounts elsewhere then let them know they can benefit from being on Hive.

I actually tried to find your name here, and to my pleasure, you are in the list. I think, I communicated in the past with as much as just three persons from UK, and you are one of them -- a !PIZZA for you.

Hello @qwerrie
Cheers for the pizza 😊😁😋
Yes, it's great to be back here in the UK, even when it's pissing it down with rain this morning.
It's cozy on the boat 😍
Wishing you a nice day☕️🤗

Is there a similar list for other countries? For example I would be happy to see a list about users from Hungary. I am from Hungary.

I don't know of a list for Hungary. Do you think there are many there? I did a quick search for accounts with Hungary in the location and found these.

gabbynhice Hungary and Philippines
cryptoparaszt Hungary
ruminy Hungary
kalemandra Hungary
kisdre Hungary
numasi Budapest, Hungary
torem-di-torem Hungary
schiba Hungary
katamori Pécs, Hungary
piaristmonk Hungary

I have made my Python scripts available, so people could adapt them for other countries.

I do not know. I rarely meet Hungarian users. I know @gabbynhice, @kalemandra, @schiba, @katamori and @piaristmonk. Probably there are more, who have not set their location. And there are also Hungarians, who live abroad.

Hello. The number of the users from Hungary (and from other countries). @steevc says he published his Python scripts, so anyone can use them to see how many users are from a given country.

Ahhh ok got it. Sad but in our country we dont have much hive users :( Even now as I saw they are promoting a hungarian network Kryza. Our people are not open minded for nothing new. I also offered to some of my frineds that I can teach them how to use a Hive apps but they are not interested. (Just the scam and MLM projects ) :D I hope starting from next summer I can be active again here but until that I had to focus on my work :(
But it`s ok lets have some !PIZZA :)

I found a few more who just had Budapest as location. You can manually create a Hungary List post once you have a few people to include. Keep an eye on people doing introduction posts or check on tags that they may use.

siggiboy81 Budapest
mattepalla Budapest
bertokandi based in Budapest
budapestguide Budapest
cherrykiss Budapest baby!!
shonariver Porn Valley, Budapest

I think @pennsif did the original Brit List manually, but I decided it would make life easier to automate it. I could not check all those accounts for activity otherwise.

hey, this is a very cool thing, to have stats like that. can you direct me to the post with the links and guides? I would love to run smth like this for the Russian community... if I manage to figure out how I can do that! thanks in advance -- a dark !BEER for you.

You can search for people just using @HiveSQL. I wrote a script to automate that which ignores those I have decided should not be included and just shows those I have not already found. This post is generated by another on Github. Both require Jupyter Notebook that is part of Anaconda.

The Python is fairly simple. Just have to compile a text file of user names and can split it by region.

@steevc, good to see we have UK growth in newcomers even if activity is slightly lower with the summer holidays. I was wondering if I could pick your brain and ask for some help? I am running a contest in Proof of Brain community in which newcomers to Proof of Brain (those who joined the platform 1st July 2021 onwards) can put themselves in with a chance of winning some Proof of Brain (POB) tokens to help them on their way. The contest post is here: Paying it forwards contest - 50 POB total up for grabs. Any chance you could help me to find a list of the July/August newcomers to Hive/Proof of Brain (all nations or UK only if that's all you can locate) so that I can tag them, welcome them and give them the opportunity to earn some nice tokens to help them on their way? I am considering making this contest a more regular event, so it would be great to find a way to reach the right audience for this. I'm just not that au fait with where to find this data or how to extract it. The contest has 3 prizes, 2 of which are only open to newcomers in Proof of Brain who can demonstrate through their posts and curation that they reflect the POB community values, and the 3rd is open to anyone and relates to engagement. Any assistance and guidance would be much appreciated.

Congratulations on the data you are able to obtain! I haven't experienced automatic voting yet. For now I prefer to curate the profiles manually. I am not convinced that my way is the best way to progress with HIVE, but it is still a more "sincere" action

I use some automated voting for specific purposes, but most of mine is manual and not done to optimise my own rewards. I do think we should reward the content we like and not just particular people.

We certainly see an increase.

January Total active UK: 90, Expats: 16
February Total active UK: 96, Expats: 16
March Total active UK: 121, Expats: 18
April Total active UK: 139, Expats: 19
May Total active UK: 178, Expats: 20
June Total active UK: 177, Expats: 23
July Total active UK: 162, Expats: 22
August Total active UK: 154, Expats: 19

From a total of 201 (including ex-pats) active accounts. Maybe you could look at "Length of time since the last post"? How we Birt's use this to increase activity and or membership needs thinking about, though. Ideally, I'd argue for a bot that says: "Hey, come on now. You've not posted for xxx days." or tag their name in a post? The trouble is, some folk would see that as comment spamming or some other reason to throw their toys out the pram. But I still like the idea.

Not much point nudging people on Hive if they are not active on it. People need reasons to post. They may be getting more engagement elsewhere, so we have to make it worth them coming back even if the money is not great. I'm up for any ideas on that.

I'm always throwing my rattle :)

Hi Steve. Thanks for keeping me on your lists, although I have - as you correctly recorded - been inactive for a while here. With the current situation worldwide leading to increasing division and ostracisation, which I am really feeling the heat of on my other social media channels, I really must get myself back to Hiving. Hopefully there are more aware and unpropagandised people over here than the likes of fb, Insta etc, which are now virtually dead in the water for me after years and years of growing my audience. Bye for now! Jay xx
