Check Your Back Before You Self-Custody

An image generated with AI
One phrase you hear time and time again is "not your keys, not your coins" and over time this concept has encouraged many people to look at self-custody as the most secure option. While for the majority, this is undoubtedly the case, I recently stumbled upon something that highlighted the fact that self-custody is often not what it seems.
A U.K resident has accused his estranged wife of stealing 2,323 Bitcoin, currently worth in the region of $176 million, but the strange thing here is, there wasn't actually any hacking involved. It appears they were watching the victim through a CCTV camera over a period of time where he was entering his seed phrase and password into his wallet and then they moved the funds into various different wallets.
What this case highlights is the fact that self-custody isn't just about the safe storage aspect of your coins and the wallet itself. It is very much about your environment and the level of access your sensitive information has to the outside world. Many individuals believe if they get a hardware wallet their coins are entirely safe, but that is just part of the security picture, and the seed phrase which is arguably the most important component, can easily be copied or watched without you realizing.
This is exactly where the term "check your back" comes into it. It is so easy to focus on the outside world and potential threats such as hackers and fraudulent websites, but at times threats can even be closer than the walls of your home and you can never be too sure who is viewing what is happening around your screen, or from the devices that surround you in your own home. This particular aspect is also important because with self-custody you have no safety net to catch you should something go wrong, and the control and responsibility are solely with the individual and nobody else.
Although this case has highlighted an unusual amount of Bitcoin being stolen, the principle is the same no matter the amount being stored, security isn't just about preventing online attacks, it's about ensuring nothing is revealed from your environment too. Self-custody remains an important tool to many, however, it seems this is not quite as easy to secure as most individuals may have thought it was and not only should you hold your keys, you shouldn't even be getting those keys seen.
