Artificial Intelligence or Human Intelligence

I previously shared a post about introducing my elementary school kids to AI usage for learning and assignment tutoring while I was occupied with other responsibilities. Most comments on that post opposed the idea of exposing children to AI for learning or as homework assistants. The main concern expressed was that it might impair a child's ability to think critically when solving simple school work problems.

When I introduced my kids to AI usage, they were working on mathematics and quantitative reasoning assignments. This coincided with preparation for a mathematics and arithmetic contest at their school, where both my daughters were selected to represent their classes. I wasn't aware of the contest until they came home the next day with a letter from school management, informing me about the event details, venue, and timing so I could prepare them and take them to meet other participating students.

I took my kids to the contest venue three days ago. Next day, I got a call from an unknown number. My 10 year old daughter was with me when I answered the call. The call came from the coordinator of the contest to inform me that both my kids came top in the contest. They requested my presence at their school by 9 AM the next day for the award presentation and photos.

The award ceremony drew many attendees, including parents with children in the school. As a proud parent, I recognized that their experience with AI for learning and assignment tutoring had served them well. While I admit I couldn't solve all those mathematics and arithmetic questions, my kids could handle them effortlessly.

Regarding whether they memorized the answers or truly understood the mathematical and arithmetic concepts they learned through AI, my position is clear. They genuinely understand the concepts and problem-solving methods. Their contest performance proves this point, as mathematics isn't a subject one can simply memorize like others.

Teaching them to use AI applications for learning has proven effective, not as a way to avoid parental duties, but as a valuable educational tool. We maintain careful control over their AI dependency for schoolwork. They don't own phones, so access is limited and requires my permission.

The experience culminated in watching my kids receive awards for outstanding excellence in mathematics at their school. We captured memorable photos with the contest coordinator and school proprietor, marking their achievement.

we should never forget that human intelligence is still important to ask the AI the right questions/prompts : )

You are right, AI response intelligence is directly tired to human asking intelligence and most AI applications can even go wrong with their responses. That's shows that human intelligence is more powerful than AI intelligence.

This is the weirdest thing ever. I literally had a dream about the same letter being drawn twice 🤯
Weird timing for a dream like that, right?

And with that, I choose the D

Congratulations on the good results for your kids 👏🏼

I'm not sure I follow who, when and why the AI was used, but it sounds like you were supervising while they used it.

From all the posts I have read from you, you certainly seem like a great father! I am sure you know what you're doing when it comes to teaching your kids about AI too. And I know you are already, but as a reminder - stay aware 👀

Much wasn't said about the learning process as the kids uses the AI application, but clearly it does mentioned teaching them how to use it and maintaining careful control to prevent the kids from depending on AI for their school home work. We can agree that there was absolute supervision and guidance as they use the AI application.

Congratulations to your girls, that's fantastic! The important thing is they understand the concepts and have truly learned. AI is a powerful tool that will be in the classroom world wide, as well as the workplace!

Yeah, you are right. AI will soon be part of the teaching system and it's good that children knows about it to prepare themselves for the future.
