A new paper titled "The Leaderboard Illusion" is circulating, taking a closer look at the LMArena leaderboard.
Suspicion arose when a Gemini model once topped the rankings by a wide margin, yet later performed worse than expected during direct testing. Similarly, Claude 3.5 was highly rated in personal use while ranking much lower on the leaderboard.
Other smaller models with seemingly limited real-world knowledge have also appeared surprisingly high in the rankings.

Here, all models serve practical use cases and are subject to private evaluations that consider both capability and cost.
Although OpenRouter’s testing volume and diversity are not yet on par with established platforms, the approach holds significant potential as a more robust and harder-to-game evaluation method.
