Road to Jungfrau! Serious hill work 951m climb

I started my trainingsblock towards the Jungfrau Marathon earlier this week with an easier hill training. As the Jungfrau has +/- 1800 m climb (almost all in the last 17km of the race) , I want to start building my climbing skills early!

Where I was training on a gradually increasing hill earlier this week, I picked a more aggresive increasing side of the same hill today. I structured the workout like this:

Warmup:

1 km flat
1 climb (long side with gradual increase)

Main training:

25 hill repeats on winding path with a steeper elevation gain

My aim was to rest as little as possible and focus on good posture. It went pretty well, lost count around 18 reps so ended up with 26 climbs on the winding path and a total of 951 m of elevation gains, in just 15 km.

Despite the shorter overall distance I decided to take water with salt and caffeine with me (SIS Hydro Cola) - which forces me to integrate nutrition in the schedule early on especially since Spring is coming!

The area is just a pleasure to start the Sunday morning, at my starting time (07:15) I was the first runner, but near the end of my session more trail runners accompanied me for their hill work!

I still need to upgrade my equipment as my current trail shoes (Salomon Sense Ride) is suitable for mud and sand, but the real mountain paths could cause more trouble. Hoka Speedgoat should be the most suitable shoe for this mission, but we will get that closer to the run! For now - thanks for reading and have a great Sunday!

Haha yeah! It is basicly the only suitable climb in 30 km area that is not a bridge near the highway so should be grinding there often! When my base is a bit stronger I will add the shorter steepest side to the mix.

Great job on that training run! 951 meters of elevation gain isn't an easy thing to do, and you pulled it off nicely. Plus you got some great scenery along the way, and a great sunrise! Smart move on the hydration, but it does sound like a good idea to upgrade those shoes to something better suited for mountainous terrain. I know Hoka is a favorite brand of many runners, back when I did more running they never fit me well due to my wide feet! lol

Glad you had a nice start to the morning. Getting ready for this marathon will be a challenge, especially with the elevation change!
