The Nigeria List: June 2024

Introduction

I have been compiling lists of Hivers in various countries using @hivesql. The profile location data is not very consistent, but I try to group people by area when there are a few. There may be some mistakes due to my lack of local knowledge.

Nigerian flag from Wikipedia

I had some requests to do Nigeria, so here it is.

Other Countries

Currently there are lists like this for:

Commentary

Nigeria has one of the largest populations of Hivers, possibly only second to Venezuela. This encouraged me to optimise my query scripts to do some of the work for me in formatting the file I produce.

There were some obvious areas to group by, but please do not be offended if I put you in the wrong place. I can update the file, but I will make it available on Github for anyone to download and update. I am sure someone could run my Python code, so I am happy for the community to take over this task. I am looking to do some other countries to get them started.

The Nigerian numbers are impressive. I looked up accounts that have been active in the last year, but they only show as active here if they posted or voted in the last month. We need to encourage people to keep coming back.

A lot of people have joined in the last few months, so it looks like recruitment is going well.

I did not find any Nigerian witnesses.

Yeah, there are no Nigerian witnesses yet, but I hope to become one. Not sure if I really have what it takes to be one at the moment.

Awesome, this was fast I wasn't expecting to see this list so soon.

I never knew there were this many of us in the hive. Hopefully, some of those inactive members can be active again.

Well it didn't take me too long after I improved my scripts a bit.

Now you know who is inactive and needs prompting to return. Good luck in building up the community. I hope you can work with others on this.

Thank you for the mention.
I am happy to see nigerians succeed in this blockchain despite the harsh government policies surrounding our usage of any crypto related platform.
The Nigerian government frowns at anything pertaining to cryptocurrency to the extent that they now freeze the bank accounts of crypto traders.

However, I must express my satisfaction with the listed growing number of hive users among nigerians.
It shows that decentralization has it's own way of thriving in the midst of harsh/centralized policies.
I am hopeful that tomorrow will be better for those of us who still believe in this era of cryptocurrency and its unstoppable impact in our intellectual and financial growth.

Long live Nigeria
Long Live Hive.
Long Live Cryptocurrency.

This is a great job you did here, well done.

I found myself in the wrong location: "Somewhere in Nigeria" under the posting list. The right location is Lagos.

Thanks for putting this together. Hopefully, there will be a witness from Nigeria soon.

If you don't add Lagos on your profile you will show up as somewhere in Nigeria. The output of any report is only as good as the input.

Such an a big community, they could easily contribute so much to Hive if they wanted to.

I think some of them do, but there's always ways to improve.

You get more out of Hive if you help build things. I do these lists and have organised some meetups. @livinguktaiwan has worked on projects like @pinmapple. Just posting to earn for yourself is not enough. You should talk to other Nigerians to see what you can do to make Hive more successful.

I used to run a Nigerian community (stemng, a sub community of stemsocial) in the days of steemit. We did meetups and we had long-term plans. However, the economic situation of the country has made many to venture into something else that takes up a bulk of their time.

None of the members of the community is currently active. It is easier to build things when your worries are beyond looking for where your next meal will come from. I sometimes become frustrated and angry with myself when powering down my stake is the only option I have left to sort out real-life expenses. But hey, at least, I've got something to resort to.

Nigeria has a really big crypto community and bitcoin whales. I had plans to take hive to them at some point after I had toured many universities around here. I can go on and on actually.

0

0.000
avatar

It sounds like you have done more than most. I do know what it is like to try and keep people active here. Hundreds of Brits are inactive. I do okay on Hive, but it's also fun for me and that matters.

I get that people will have more pressing things to worry about. Hive just offers opportunities that we can take if we want.

I am frustrated by the corporate platforms and it amazes me that more crypto fans don't come here.

0

0.000
avatar

The fact that we are still means there's still hope. I'm not giving up. All it could take could be just for one person to discover this platform. I'm optimistic.

0

0.000
avatar

The fact that people are signing up in Nigeria is positive. I don't know what is driving that, but it could be worth someone investigating.

0

We can leverage our userbase to bring Hive's attention to the movers and shakers in the Nigerian cryptosphere.

0

I think what is driving that is the ongoing Vibes web3 music competition. I see a couple of Nigerians who are into music keying in. I hope they stick around after when the competition is over.

Vibes is bringing people to Hive, but we always had issues with keeping them active. We need to do more to fix that.

As @livinguktaiwan says, I rely on profile location data and yours just says Nigeria. I have presented this as an initial list and I think the Nigerian community should work on improving it. They can use it as they like and I am just trying to help out.

Nice to see you do this compilation of Hivers in my country.

A good number of Nigerians are on Hive which is good but the problem is that most don't really fancy growing their accounts. They prefer withdrawing the little they have been earnings. Just a few understand this and strive to do it.
