The Brit List: March 2025

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I was using beem to generate this post, but that is not in active development and I found HiveSQL could do it much quicker. I use Python for most things. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

Logo by @barge

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The #teamuk tag has been used to show you are in the UK and was earning extra votes from a bot, but that has not been active lately. Using the tag may still help me to find you, but please contact me if you think you should be on the list.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry. There is the option to be counted without being tagged on these posts if you want that.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

Previous editions

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

  • Active as above.
  • Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
  • Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.

Other Countries

I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.

Commentary

I have to report that the active user count fell slightly again last month. That may be down to the $HIVE price not improving, but it is at least well ahead of the 'legacy crapcoin' now. Even their 'stablecoin' has slumped. I have said many times that we should be prepared to accept some people from over there coming over here, but I know that some who either got on the wrong side of the fork or who have been caught abusing the platform will not be welcome.

I know that part of the problem is a lack of audience here, but then we need people to give Hive a chance to remedy that and they may find that there is a lack of the content they want to see. We should support those who put out content with general appeal, especially if it is of a 'professional' standard. I know of a few Brits doing that, but I will refrain from singling them out here. You may see some examples on my semi-regular #FollowFriday posts.

I am always interested to hear the opinions of others on why Hive is not growing and what we can do to build up the Brit community. I think we have been lacking in meetups in the last few years. Those can help build the community spirit.

There is an effort to get some Hiveans to the London Dev Expo in July. If you would be interested then please stop by the Brits Discord in the Team UK channel. It would be great to have some people there representing this blockchain.

Otherwise anyone can set up a meetup. It really does not have to be anything fancy. If you can find a venue (can be a cafe or pub) and name a date then something can happen. You can use this list to find out who is nearby. I will publicise events I hear about.

Analyzing @buildawhale's Hive Transactions and Power Delegations

Introduction

In the decentralized world of blockchain, transparency is key. Today, we’re diving deep into the wallet activity of @buildawhale, a prominent account on the Hive blockchain. By analyzing its transactions and power delegations, we aim to uncover patterns that may indicate how this account operates. This post will guide you through the process of adding these transactions to a spreadsheet for better analysis while shedding light on the role of Hive Power (HP) in governance, voting, and rewards.

Key Observations from @buildawhale’s Wallet Activity

  1. Withdraw Vesting Transactions

    • Over time, @buildawhale has consistently withdrawn vesting shares (converted into HIVE) to another account, @ipromote.
    • These withdrawals occur weekly or bi-weekly, with amounts ranging from ~5000 HIVE to ~16000 HIVE.
    • Example:
      • Oct 29, 2024: Withdraw vesting from @buildawhale to @ipromote4510.472 HIVE
      • Nov 13, 2024: Started power down → 66,216.338 HP
  2. Power Down Events

    • The account frequently initiates "power downs," converting staked Hive Power (HP) into liquid HIVE over a 13-week period.
    • However, there are instances where the power-down process is stopped abruptly, suggesting strategic management of funds.
  3. Delegated Hive Power

  4. Outgoing Transfers

    • Filtering the wallet page by “outgoing transfers” reveals numerous transactions directed toward @ipromote.
    • Additionally, small amounts of HIVE (~0.100–0.500 HIVE) are sent intermittently, possibly as fees or operational costs.
  5. Behavioral Patterns

    • A large portion of the delegated HP appears to be used for farming purposes, such as making spam burn comments and self-voting.
    • Such activities raise questions about whether this setup is legitimate or part of a larger scheme aimed at exploiting the Hive ecosystem.

Step-by-Step Guide to Analyze Transactions Using a Spreadsheet

To systematically analyze @buildawhale’s transactions, follow these steps:

  1. Create Columns in Your Spreadsheet

    • Date: Record the timestamp of each transaction.
    • Type: Categorize the transaction (e.g., withdraw vesting, power down, delegation).
    • From Account: Source of the transaction (@buildawhale).
    • To Account: Destination of the transaction (e.g., @ipromote).
    • Amount (HIVE/HP): Value transferred in HIVE or Hive Power.
    • Notes: Add any relevant observations (e.g., purpose of transfer).
  2. Filter Data for Clarity

    • Use filters to isolate specific types of transactions, such as “withdraw vesting” or “power down.”
    • Highlight unusual patterns, like sudden spikes in outgoing HIVE.
  3. Visualize Trends

    • Create charts to visualize trends over time, such as monthly withdrawal totals or cumulative HP delegations.
  4. Cross-Reference Findings

    • Compare your data with other accounts involved (e.g., @ipromote) to identify correlations or dependencies.

Insights from the Analysis

  • High Volume of Outgoing Funds: The consistent flow of HIVE to @ipromote suggests a structured operation, potentially linked to profit extraction.
  • Large Delegations Leveraged for Farming: With over 2.3 million HP delegated, @buildawhale wields substantial influence within the Hive ecosystem. However, using this power for spam-like activities undermines community trust.
  • Potential Scam Indicators:
    • Frequent power downs followed by immediate restarts.
    • Self-voting and repetitive commenting behavior.
    • Lack of transparency regarding the destination and use of funds.

Why Hive Power Matters

  • Governance & Voting: Staked HP gives users voting power in proposals and witness elections, shaping the future of the Hive blockchain.
  • Rewards Mechanism: Holding HP increases earning potential through curation rewards and inflationary payouts (~12.96% APR).
  • Ecosystem Health: Misuse of HP, especially via spam tactics, can harm the network’s integrity and user experience.

Conclusion

By examining @buildawhale’s wallet activity, we’ve uncovered a complex web of transactions and delegations that warrant closer scrutiny. While the account benefits from massive HP delegations, its actions suggest questionable practices that could exploit the Hive ecosystem. Transparency and accountability remain crucial for maintaining trust in decentralized platforms.

We encourage readers to explore the provided link (@buildawhale’s wallet) and conduct their own investigations. Together, we can ensure the Hive blockchain remains a fair and thriving environment for all participants.

I'm not really knowledgeable enough on finance and crypto to be able to make suggestions on how to improve Hive price, but I feel like use case would certainly be a good driver. I'm guessing the main thing that would improve Hive price is demand, so use case should create demand. The Hispanic countries seem to be the only ones making any headway there, though. If government doesn't encourage or support it, it seems people need to be pulled out of their comfort zones to start doing it themselves.

I didn't realise that keeping HBD stable came at a big expense. Is this funded through the decentralised funding pathway?

Hive is doing well in some Hispanic countries, but people there may not have the funds to invest in it. The price goes up if people are buying.

The DHF is used to manage the HBD price as far as I understand it. The economics of managing a stable coin are not simple.

Mr Chops is over a third of the way to whale. I am under a quarter, so it could take many years to get there. I do hope we can get more whales to spread the influence. I get some people asking for my vote on proposals anyway.

Seeing the current prize development is so annyoing - I had a plan to accumulate more Hive and thought buying at 40 cent is good as we had a new basis at 50 cents - lost over 10k USD with that - not buying anything anymore, even if Hive goes under 20 cents (probably tomorrow) - these days you hate crypto!
