The Brit List: May 2025

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I was using beem to generate this post, but that is not in active development and I found HiveSQL could do it much quicker. I use Python for most things. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

Logo by @barge

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The #teamuk tag has been used to show you are in the UK and was earning extra votes from a bot, but that has not been active lately. Using the tag may still help me to find you, but please contact me if you think you should be on the list.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry. There is the option to be counted without being tagged on these posts if you want that.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

Previous editions

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

  • Active as above.
  • Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
  • Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.

Other Countries

I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.

Commentary

After seeing a small increase last month we have dropped back again. User retention is a serious issue on Hive. It can be hard to know exactly why as you cannot reach the people who have left, but I am interested in opinions on this. I do have friends who gave up for various reasons. Often it was just lack of time when they might see more activity on other platforms. I find plenty to like on Hive, but it will depend on your interests.

What we need is more pioneers who are prepared to take a chance on something new. The earnings are an attraction, but the $HIVE price is not doing much exciting lately. Of course it helps that if we have a more active community, but then people leave if the price is low, so we cannot easily win.

There are some discussions going on about what Hive can do for musicians and that is an interest for me. I have always said that it could be a good place for smaller acts with just hundreds of fans who will not earn elsewhere. If they bring their fans over then both sides can win. The problem may be in creating enough accounts, but some of us could help with that if we can claim accounts. We need to get a buzz going about Hive (pun intended) so that people tell their friends about it. Each of us can help with that. We can sell it as an alternative to corporate platforms that exploit users.

If you do recruit someone then you may have to put in effort getting them through their early days as Hive is different to other platforms. You have to build a following yourself.

If you want Hive to grow then you have to be part of the marketing team. We all benefit if you succeed.

Retention - i find hive to be a tad, a wee bit, exclusive. Plus, I struggle with relationships as a whole, so it's very difficult for me to maintain connections. But yes, a bit exclusive, and needs to be more unconditional.

Hive is small compared to other platforms with just thousands of users and people will support those they know. But then you can be seen by the biggest players. Try that on FB/YT etc! I find most people here to be welcoming, but you have to engage and then you can get out what you put in. It does not happen overnight. If Hive does grow then it could be a different place again.

Indeed, it has many good points. Many. I was just stating why someone may leave, from my point of view. I hope hive does take off, but then it will become like Facebook and in so become what it so despises, but then this is the fate of all in our way of life.

Some may give up when they don't get instant results. I made bugger all for months at the start,

A bigger Hive will not be like FB as it won't have their central control and censorship. The distribution of rewards will change though as there could be more big accounts. This is radical technology and nothing is pre-ordained.

Yes it does and it's a project work supporting via the proposal.

I do think we need some love, developer wise on the UI and on some basic stuff to add things that support newer ways of interacting. If you think about it not much has changed on hive in the last couple of years.

Gotta adapt or die!

I think more has gone into the background, but then peakd has added Snaps and chat. InLeo is adding features too, but I have not kept up with those.

What do you think is missing?

I think Peakd has done a good job adding things but I think a swish mobile first approach is what is needed. One that is simple and looks good and conforms to some of the more modern standards. As in an actual mobile app and not just a mobile version of a desktop. If we want adoption we need an app. An app that is good and slick. That's where the users of the future are. The old crowd logging on a pc to write blogs are the minority. The kids want apps.

At least, that's my view 😀

Yes, apps are vital. The Ecency one is pretty good, but the content in Waves mostly sucks. A single feed of everyone will never be useful. Someone needs to summarise all the mobile apps we have. I just use Ecency and Keychain, but I have used the 3speak one before.

I do need to look at ecency again. I tried it for a while ages ago.

There was one a good while ago that seemed to do almost everything right but the developer never really got recognised and hotfooted it off into the cryptosphere and that was that

Thanks for the update !

User retention is definitely an issue Hive has, but I think quite often it's something that happens in the first couple of months. There's so much to Hive, so it can be really hard to explain to people (is it a social media platform, a place to blog, a place to earn crypto, a gaming space, or all of the above ?) and when that's combined with the time it takes to get established and understand how it works, that's not as easy as legacy social media places.

I like the idea of finding a niche (musicians, or whatever) and really focusing in on it. In my perfect little world, I feel like everyone who comes to a gig could be given a small brochure (pocket sized, with just 4-6 pages) outlining what Hive is, how joining can support their favourite local band, more focused on info/social rather than earnings. The last page of the brochure would be a QR code which can be scanned to create an instant account - but the bit that's hard to do but might help lock them in is if we could find a way to pre-load it with a delegation of a couple of hundred HP for (say) 4 months.

Another option might be to get #SpendHBD up and running in a local area - a small town or shopping centre with lots of independent businesses. Watching how that's worked in Nigeria to get new people onboard has been impressive !

It would be cool if artists could promote Hive at gigs. I know you can create accounts with the Keychain app, but I've not tried that yet. They could have a few people doing that.

I'm not sure what the issues are with UK businesses taking crypto payments. On BTC Map I don't see many options near me to spend it.

I did the Turkish list once, but will not be doing regular updates. Someone from the local community could do a better job. I do not have time to do other countries.

It seems that in the last few months the number of active members has remained around 150.
That could change at any moment, the list will be growing and the numbers will surely multiply very soon.

Hive and music, there is definitely a strong connection there and is something we can all work on to build up some retention. Over the past couple of days we’ve been chatting about attempting to build a track across different countries and bringing audio together. Tricky but doable.

Hive can be seen as being a bit niche and a lot of folk are scared to work too hard for their social media. So I feel that Hive is something very different and perhaps should be promoted differently.

It's definitely different and the learning curve can be steep, but it can be worth spending time learning about it. I find other platforms so frustrating, so that's why I hang out here.

As you mentioned above, dormant accounts will return if Hive prices rise
