The Brit List: July 2024
Introduction
I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I was using beem to generate this post, but that is not in active development and I found HiveSQL could do it much quicker. I use Python for most things. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.
I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.
Those based in the UK can use the #teamuk tag for an extra vote. If you see people using it on non-relevant posts then drop them a friendly comment to point out that is not encouraged.
The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry.
The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

What it means
The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:
- Active as above.
- Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
- Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.
I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.
Other Countries
I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.
- Australia. 66 active.
- Ghana. 28 active.
- Germany. 103 active.
- Indonesia. 154 active.
- Ireland. 23 active (2022).
- Netherlands by @michelmake. 44 active.
- Nigeria. 507 active.
- Portugal. 25 active.
- Romania. 10 active.
- Scandinavia. 31 active.
- South Africa. 31 active.
- Spain. 52 active.
- Turkey. 12 active.
Commentary
Not much change again this month. I found a few more accounts, but others have not posted recently. The current low price will not help matters as people will feel it is not worth their time, but it can depend on what future you expect for Hive. Some of us will keep stacking HP. Even if you automate your votes you can be earning passively.
I have had a good response to my lists for other countries, but nobody is offering to take on maintaining them apart from the Netherlands. I will not have time to re-run them monthly like I do for this one. I think it is better for local communities to do that anyway. Venezuela would be a lot of work and so would the USA, so I have yet to attempt those.
I would hope to see a few Brits at @hivefest. Having been to several previous events I can recommend the experience.

Thanks for all the hard work you put in doing this, @steevc 😀
I have to say that considering the dramatic drop in the price of HIVE, I expected a lot more people to go inactive, so it could have been a lot worse !
That's true. I think the dynamics vary by country. For people in the UK it can be more of a hobby, but there is the potential for big earnings. I just want to encourage community growth and activity. It's fun for me too.
I'd love to find a way to really boost the number of UK Hivers !
I keep having the mad idea that we need to emulate the guys over in Sucre. To me, getting a bunch of businesses in a local area onboard seems like a good way to go, although finding the right location and giving it enough long term support (both to businesses and customers who come onboard) to build momentum would be the hard part.
@thedistriator has been doing quite a bit of work on HBD retail payment and cashback solutions, which might be part of the solution.
I think there are issues for businesses wanting to take crypto as it complicates their accounts. I would use it more if I could.
It can add a little bit of extra accounting work, but not too much if you set it up right. Depending on your software, you can either treat it like any other foreign currency transaction, or make it like a bank account and then revalue it to Sterling when you convert from crypto.
The bigger issues I have are a customer base that are resistant to crypto (no matter how much I'd love to take it !) plus the lack of any crypto plugins for WooCommerce that let me choose HBD and/or HIVE as an option alongside more widely known things like BTC and ETH.
I am not sure if they can use HBD as an acceptance of payment especially with the MiCA regulations HBD would definitely not be allowed. I know MiCA is EU however, but I am sure the UK will take it's lead from them on this.
I haven't read the MiCA regulations in detail (as you say, it's an EU thing rather than a UK one). It's likely that we'll have the same issue as with GPSR's however, which effectively ban UK e-commerce businesses from selling products manufactured outside the EU to Northern Ireland from 13th December this year (which will also ban the sale of most UK-made products other from the most massive manufacturers that can afford to have an EU premises and staff as well as a UK one).
But the advantage of having a totally new government is that it'll probably take them a year or two to find their feet and reverse everything they can of what the Tories did, or re-write what's in progress to match their ideology, before they have the capacity to start dealing with completely new things.
I think this is why they would just follow MiCA'S regulations instead of formulating their own and use the basics with a few add ons for the UK. There is only a few stablecoins that will be allowed and places like Binance have already agreed they will have to keep them separate so as they are not available for the EU users.
I would argue that they are not going to stop people using a non KYC stable coin that is spent at legitimate businesses with tax numbers.
It is perfect for demonstrating that no money laundering is going on if it is spent for normal purchases on chain at legit, whitelisted businesses that are already registered with the local government anyway.
Soon, there will be a pool that you pay into, from an anon account if you wish, and the payments you make to legitimate whitelisted businesses will be paid from that pool, thus anonymizing your payments, but also provably showing that your payments were made to legitimate businesses for legitimate purchases.
It satisfies both the govt and the pro anon users!
Is there a Marmite vendor that ships to the USA?
Why not try it in the UK, flyer for a workshop every tuesday at a place near you, then explain how people can monetize for spending using #spendhbd and distriator.com
All necessary materials for a workshop are here: https://hive.blog/hive-106130/@thedistriator/distriator-or-steps-to-run-a-successful-spendhbd-workshop
All steps to onboard a business are here: https://hive.blog/hive-106130/@thedistriator/introducing-businesses-to-distriator-a-step-by-step-guide
Every time you onboard a person and they make a claim, you get some commissions
Every time you onboard a business and a claim is made there you get some commissions for that too!
Thanks for adding me to your list 😃
No problem. I want to list everyone I can find.
Wow, you’ve done a great job keeping this list updated and organized brother. The idea of getting local businesses to accept HIVE is interesting but looks a bit challenging. Looking forward to more adoption for the platform
Great work and stats of the Hive diaspora in the UK
I find it quite weird that Nigeria has the most active people on the hive, is that not where all the e mail scammers are based too?
I think Venezuela has more, but I've not processed it yet. Nigeria has a population of 230m and I expect scammers are a small minority. Hive does well in places where people don't earn much. There is a lot of growth potential there. If the scammers get into Hive then we have to deal with them.
👍
I'm on tour in France for the next 8 weeks zoot aloors! Internet is patchy and mobile phone costs extortionate. I'll be uploading anything interesting that I see.
I wonder why roaming got more expensive...
Have a good trip. Interesting times for France.

Yep it's certainly going through some big changes!
Fortunately for the UK the rabid right wing Tories are toast.
Phone Roaming post Brexit?
I had roaming in Austria and Switzerland this year on O2, but other networks may not have as much now thanks to our 'freedoms'.
Time that i started being active again ...
I see it's a year since you said you would be active :) I hope you will be with us more often now.

.Hey @newtonclassics, here is a little bit of
BEER
from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .
I had no idea Steemit had transition to this new Hive Thingymajig! A friend from the Steemit days let me know, which was handy as I still had coinage. Does this platform work like steemit, and where is the best place to find out more? I am very rusty with all this, but I know 4 years or so ago we had a thriving music collective - I'm in the Midlands BTW
Hey! It's much like the other site was at its peak. Honest, original content with good engagement can earn, but you have to build your following. We do need more people though. The music side is pretty good with things like @risingstargame promoting artists.
