Follow Friday: Waving, not drowning

The News

The $HIVE price crept up a little this week, but it looks like it is just the Korean speculators again, so do not expect it to last. If only they would actually use the platform. I think everyone should be welcome here.

Prices

For a long time people were saying Hive needed short-form posts. Now we have several options. @dbuzz has been around for a while and Leo Threads is well established. Ecency introduced their version called Waves a few months ago and now it is available in their mobile app. That makes it very easy to put out a brief update with an image. It still needs some development, but people are having fun with it. I have used the Ecency app for mobile Hive for a long time and I will Wave.

Friday Follows

  • @drumnasium is a big music producer with a sizeable following on other platforms. He has been brought to Hive by the @threespeak guys so I assume this is a genuine account. He has only posted once so far, but I hope he will be back.
  • @buzzparty is all about publicising and celebrating Hive meetups. You can win some delegation with a post on that topic and I am sponsoring the prize along with @tibfox.
  • I posted yesterday about the book by @nevies that I read. He is active again here.
  • The @plantpower vegan community just celebrated two years on Hive.
  • I suggest you check out the #hivefest tag to see what people get up to there next weekend. I think some people are already starting their travels. This may generate some FOMO though.

Events

I am copying some of this from last week as it is still relevant.

  • Hive Fest is just a couple of weeks away. I wish I was going, but I have done my long distance travel for this year. I am sure it will be great.
  • That same week there is a meetup in Halifax, UK for those who can get there.
  • @coldbeetrootsoup have a meetup in the Netherlands this month.
  • If you can get to Kraków in Poland on 7th October then @gtg is hosting HiveBeeCon. It may be just some Hivers enjoying pizza and a drink, but any gathering of such people is fun.
  • @shanibeer is involved in a discussion of Hive at a business festival in Leicester, UK in November.

The Dog House

In the dog house this week is 'Hive Drama'. I really hate to see people fighting here and here is another case. Funnily enough the same person was complaining three years ago and I had exactly the same thoughts then.

I have seen so many people complain about 'self-appointed Hive police'. In case you have not realised it Hive does not have a boss and so it is up to individuals to decide if they want to deal with what they see as abuse. That can be subjective, but we are a pretty small community and so cases can stick out. Some people think that getting rewarded more than once for the same content is wrong. I get that you could have posted something a while back when it did not get much attention and you want to try again, but you ought to at least do something to make it fresh. The problem can be made worse if you get automatic votes that take no account of quality.

I just think this sort of thing should not get personal and vindictive. If someone shows signs of wanting to make amends then give them a chance. They will have to win the forgiveness of a few people to keep earning anyway.

If people see a high reputation user 'rage quitting' then it may scare them off. You can almost be guaranteed that the quitter will spread bad vibes. I know some got to the 'B' site and bitch about Hive there, but they may do it in more public spaces too.

There needs to be some sort of balance in dealing with what is considered abuse without driving more people away. I also appreciate that those who take action can get a lot of flack. They get plenty of threats and there have been cases of 'doxing'.

The End

I will not be at @hivefest and I will miss the Halifax meetup too, but I hope to get to other, more local, events soon. I consider any meeting of two or more Hivers to be a meetup and it can be anywhere. You just need to put the word out. Tag me and I will spread it.

Hive is an endless adventure that will have ups and downs. It is up to you to make the most of it, but try to enjoy the ride.

Hive five!

I see that there is a Hive booth at the Breathe conference in Vegas right now too. It looks pretty sweet from the pictures I have seen. I hope I am able to get to some kind of meet up eventually one day.

I don't know how big Breathe is, but I hope that a few more people learn about Hive. There is also the rally car that was racing in Greece.

You should do a meetup even if it is just a few people you know. It still counts :)

Hive has its issues, but I believe it's mostly good. We have to get the balance right.

I hope you get some sleep.

OH I was considering it a real pump, but again it is done by Koreans.

We've seen this a few times. A real 'pump' will be driven by people using Hive.
