The News

I usually include a price chart on these posts, but there is not much to report there. The $HIVE price is pretty stable. The 'blue coin' somehow manages to keep some value, but in both cases the Korean traders are having an influence and they may not care so much about utility.

Prices

I heard that The Site Formerly Known as Twitter is looking at a small yearly charge for new accounts to discourage spam. I have no inclination to give them money when the current owner is wrecking what people valued it for. I hardly post there any more.

I heard about a couple of projects this week via @slobberchops. Holozing is a new Hive game with some elements of Pokémon. A team of established Hivers is behind this, so it has a good chance of going somewhere.

There are various libraries for accessing Hive from code. beem is good, but it is not being developed lately. Lighthive is a promising alternative that I need to look at.

Friday Follows

  • I have to mention @buzzparty again as they announced the result of their recent contest and I was sponsoring a prize in that. You should follow them for news of meetups. There are a lot of those going on.
  • @epodcaster is again organising NaPodPoMo (National Podcast Post Month). I have done this before, but will see if I have time to do it again. There are lots of posting challenges out there. Anything that motivates you to post is good.
  • @bobbyb58 got some photos of the new U2 show in Las Vegas. It looks spectacular.
  • @normie.fitness is always good for some busting some fitness myths.

These people get a share of the post rewards.

The Dog House

There was yet another case this week of someone saying they will quit Hive due to getting downvoted. This user was posting many times each day and some consider that to be 'farming' rewards. From what I can see they were not making much from this. Anyway, they now say they are quitting, but will donate their rewards to some charities. We had a little discussion and it was quite civil.

I have seen this pattern many times. Complaining about the downvotes can lead of more of them. Some people really get pissed off by this and start attacking members of the community. There have even been examples of doxing. Some people get vindictive against others who they have never met.

I just wish people could be civilised about this. Behind most (maybe now all) Hive accounts is a person with feelings and online discourse may not be the best way to appreciate what they are feeling. We should still be able to talk out our differences. Hive does not have actual rules about what we can do, but there are some (mostly) accepted norms.

If people want to post ten times each day then there are places for that. This person has been using @reverio, which is a Q&A platform. There is also @dbuzz for short posts. You can use Inleo Threads or Ecency Waves which post into comments. Those tend to avoid the issues with automatic votes. Some of the others let you set a limit on the rewards.

We have to be realistic about all this. Some people have a lot of time on their hands and may choose to use it posting on Hive. Maybe they make a few dollars, but others can post once a week and make far more just because they get some big automatic votes. If they drive some genuine engagement then either can be valid.

We may have bigger challenges ahead. The issue of 'AI'-generated posts is growing and if thousands of desperate people sign up then the job of sorting out what is genuine will get a lot harder.

I just hate to see people leave Hive when they could be part of the community. It is not like we are growing fast and those who leave will discourage others from joining.

The End

I needed to get that out, but I am sure others will disagree with me on some things. That is fine. Hive should have diverse opinions.

Hive is a mostly positive experience for me and that is what keeps me coming back. Around the world it is changing lives and we need to celebrate that. We have freedom and that includes the freedom to be a troll. We have to cope with that as best we can.

Enjoy your weekend and Hive five!

I didn't know the new hive pokemon game. I have to look into this. Thanks for the information.

I wonder if it will be more similar to Axie Infinity in play style.

It's a difficult one to balance for sure. I recently saw someone who's been here for a while, and a pretty popular good quality poster, get downvoted off the platform because they were perceived to have "reduced the quality of their post" and posting "low effort" stuff. Pretty sad.

It's the actions of a few that drive them away. Those with that power need to use it carefully. I get that they try to deal with actual abuse, but it can be subjective and I think people should be given a chance to change before the DVs kick in.

That's just horrible! Who decides what is "quality"? If you don't like it don't vote for it..
People have good and bad days and surely can't produce the same level all the time.
If this really is supposed to be a social network then this argument about "quality" is out of place in my opinion and WILL drive people away.

Thanks for the Friday Follow mention. :-D

This year's #NaPodPoMo is another experience in building the plane while flying it ala "building in public" as it is more commonly known. I remember in 2021 when I brought NaPodPoMo to Hive by creating a community. You were one of the handful of folks who joined. I appreciate your ongoing support of the 30-day podcasting challenge. As you know it's not an easy challenge, but I think folks will find great satisfaction by being a part of it.

I've been lax on my podcasting generally this year, but I have other things going on. I am still a big podcast listener though.

Same. I listen daily and yet also do not podcast myself on a regular basis outside of NaPodPoMo and the occasional Spaces which can become a podcast.

from your beautiful graphs it seems that in the last 3 months there have been no major changes, thanks for the information. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time I've seen Tron in your charts. I think you put it for comparison with HIVE

I added Tron a while ago in case we get the chance to see it go down. It amazes me that people invest in coins with no real utility.

In the last year TRON has made a +47%. As you wrote, it doesn't have much use, but it seems like a blockchain with smart contracts with fast and inexpensive transactions. Maybe we are the ones who are missing something? However I see HBD starting to be used as payment for services in Cuba. This is really a great thing

Holozing sounds really cool and I'm looking forward to having a go of it when it's ready.

I think you make a good point about the user who was posting multiple times a day, in all the cases I've seen with people doing that sort of thing it's nothing compared to some other users. But, there's the arguement that having 100+ users doing this could add up so fast, so it's better to nip it in the bud sooner rather than later.

Nonetheless, driving people away is never a good thing, especially when we should be growing. But, on that same note. 1 good user is better than 100 people who only care about making and taking whatever they can get, while adding little to Hive as a whole.

Quality is a matter of opinion, but churning out lots of random questions does not add much value. There are people doing loads of Threads each day and the Leo team have no issue with that.

Very true, but I think Threads is kind of different because a thread doesn't show up as a post on a users main account and is similar to waves in that way.

I agree about quality being a matter of opinion. I do think though that if Hive - hypethically - was filled with random questions and posts with barely any content, discoverability of more interesting content would become tougher.

I see a fair few posts with 1 AI image and barely any words. I think people should be allowed to post that sort of stuff, but I'm not really a fan of it.

I think it's good that Threads and Waves are viewed separately to posts. I make use of them as I would Twitter with no expectation of rewards.

I can imagine a scenario where hundreds of people sign up and vote for each others 'low quality' posts. Downvoting them all may be hard, but if we give our votes to the good stuff then that gets more of the rewards. As I said, it will be challenging.

If the price of $HIVE goes up then it will be harder to buy a decent stake and if there are many more users then the rewards will be spread thinner. We have an advantage by getting in early.

Holozing sounds super interesting, I still have my old polemon go account. I definitely will be checking that one out, thanks for sharing.

I missed the dog house episode, just read the dialogue. I don't understand why people have to keep on broadcasting their charity donations and emphasise their departure. We've seen people make departure announcements over and over again as if they expect people to beg them to stay, it just gets pathetic imho. The only person who I'm sad had left is tdctunes

People need to have reasons to want to stay. I think some don't really have friends here, whereas we have met a lot of Hivers. I'm with you on TDC. I know he had issues with how Pixie was treated. Driving them away is bad for Hive.

I thought I was being quite civil to that chap when I answered his question on why he has been downvoted (not heavily at that time). I just said posting with that frequency can look like farming, boom , after that it was just tirade after tirade and retaliatory downvotes. Sometimes getting involved is quite the pain in the arse

Yeah, it can be hard work. Trying to retaliate against the community will never end well. Hive is small and you will get noticed if you are doing something unusual. There needs to be some give on both sides to resolve such issues.

There does, there have been cases where someone doesn't flip out but in this case he did. Admittedly I became quite rude to him but that was after many a 500 plus word reply telling me how stupid I was or what a bad parent I was and I only downvoted two of his posts out of the many!

He didn't even seem that bad an offender. Maybe over-enthusiastic about posting, but perhaps not malicious. Hive needs to default to being welcoming and only bring out the big guns for troublemakers.

He wasn't that bad true, that's why he didn't get walloped at first. It was more his reaction that done him in. I do agree though, people need a chance but he was an old old account not a newcomer. I think that's partly why he went berserk

Personally, i see this as a social platform, i steer clear of most of what goes on within it.. I post my songs now after i've recorded them, play splinterlands.. but it's not a good place for me to be really, social media. I don't like it, online interactions..

Just over the last couple of weeks we've seen the price look pretty good to us and it's looking pretty solid, and if we look at it now, if it goes above 32 and a half cents, then it's will go up to 35 cents.
