The original gold coin, I have never seen this before β¦β¦.
Is it a variation of a gold sovereign?

The 1839 5 pound gold coin, also known as the "Una and the Lion" coin, is not a variation of a gold sovereign. While both coins are British gold coins from the 19th century, they have distinct differences.
The 1839 5 pound coin was designed by William Wyon to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign. It features a depiction of Queen Victoria as the character Una from Edmund Spenser's poem "The Faerie Queene," walking alongside a lion. The coin was primarily made as a proof coin for collectors and was not intended for circulation.
On the other hand, the gold sovereign is a circulating coin that was first issued in 1817 and features a different design, typically depicting Saint George slaying the dragon.
So, @silvertop... oneβs a showstopper for display, and the other was the go-to for buying a loaf of bread. π
