First attempt at sub 20 min 5km

Hi all,

Welcome here at my running blog! While I am mostly focus on marathons I do have some fun side quests to aim for on shorter distances. Both because it will overall help me get faster , plus it is something that I am not that good at right now.

With my next marathon scheduled for the end of November, I now have some time to work on improving my shorter distance times:

  • 5km first goal => sub 20 min.

  • today’s attempt: 20:16 (previous best 20:36) almost there!

  • 10km first goal => sub 40 min

  • current best attempt: 43:21 still quite some work to do!

  • half marathon, first goal => sub 90 min

  • current best attempt: 92:27 almost there!

Today I did my first attempt on breaking 20 min for 5 km. Normally I just start running and decide after a bit to go for a faster time. This time I did a proper warm up and started with the 5km in my mind.

While starting, I noticed fatigue / heavy legs and felt a bit weak. I decided to just give it a go and don’t look at my watch for the pace (mistake!)

My aim was to take a short sprint for the last 300m but I miscalculated the distance (should had just looked at my watch 😝) but still came pretty close to my goal! Furthermore it was fun and am already looking forward to the next attempt!

After the run, I did a short 2km cooldown. Bringing todays total at 8 km.

Happy running!

how many kilometres are you running per week in training to break sub20? I did 20:39 in 2019 at parkrun but am a long way off that at the moment.

Hey! 20:39 is also very nice!!

Off season, like now, I am running roughly 50-60 km a week. In season that is about 70-90 km.

Sofar I just focused on long distance and some tempo & LT runs. Hope that when I start adding interval I will see real improvements in my time!

If the sprints have to be calculated very well because in speed one second counts. Best regards
