Lesson from the hour glass: Why you should start cherishing your life more?

avatar

This is how one should look at the hour glass. Let it teach you a life lesson.

The hour glass, which is used to quantify time elapsed, allows the sand to fall freely from one chamber to the next due to gravity.

What is at the bottom is the effect of time passed. There is nothing one can do with time lost. Nothing can change the past.

The sand will continue to flow down, that is, time will continue to pass moment to moment.

The momentary awareness of the point of exit from the upper chamber to the lower chamber is all that matters to us. That is the present moment.

Stare at it. Right there at the middle of the hour glass, where the arrow is. This is the now. As the sand is flowing down, you can choose to be mindful of the present moment. Unbounded by the regrets of the past, and worries of the future. This is mindfulness.

But you know what?

When one can blocks off the upper chamber or cover it (like the image below), it looks way more like life.

You see, in life, we won't know how much time we are left with. We could be moments, days, weeks, months, years, or decades away from the last life threatening episode that takes our life. It could be flood, fire, accidents, sickness... The cause of death is aplenty, and the occurrence uncertain.

We won't ever know how much sand we have in our upper chamber of life.

Hope you did get the lesson from the hour glass, and convince you that you should start cherishing your precious human life more?

Cordial greetings, dear and distant friend @mituoshizhe.
Excellent reflection about the present moment and the enjoyment of life, which will have an end, but it will not be now, so that we better enjoy it, among the different authors that I came across during my search, I remember with special affection Anthony de Melo, who brought my world and yours closer in his books.

A hug and my thanks for the unconditional support. I welcome your post.

Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita: "Time I am, destroyer of all worlds...". Despite that the Gita also says the real self is eternal.
