Hiking at Los Peñasquitos Canyon - San Diego, CA [EN/PT-BR]

It's starting to feel like spring! I know it's still winter, and a lot of people are still seeing snow, but here in the south the weather is amazing. It's just perfect for hiking, there is still a cold breeze but the sun is nice and warm. Today me and my wife went out on a hike at Los Peñasquitos Canyon, we started from the trailhead on Sorrento Valley Rd, and we walked 2.8 Miles (4.5 Km) all the way to Peñasquitos Creek Waterfall, and then back. The total hike in and out was 5.6 Miles (9 Km).

As you can see in the first pictures, the trail starts by going underneath Sorrento Valley Rd.

Ja da pra sentir a primavera chegando! Sei que ainda é inverno e muitas pessoas ainda estão vendo neve, mas aqui no sul o tempo está maravilhoso. É perfeito para fazer caminhadas, ainda ta rolando uma brisa geladinha, mas o sol ta bem agradável e quente. Hoje eu e minha esposa saímos para uma caminhada no Los Peñasquitos Canyon. Começamos no início da trilha na Sorrento Valley Rd e caminhamos 4,5 km até a Peñasquitos Creek Waterfall (uma cachoeira pequena) e depois voltamos. O total da caminhada de ida e volta foram 9 km.

Como você pode ver nas primeiras fotos, a trilha começa passando por baixo da Sorrento Valley Rd.

Just a few minutes of walk and we had an interesting encounter with a rattle snake. These snakes are very common here, and you see signs on every trail alerting hikers for the danger of these snakes. They are extremely poisonous. As you can see in the pictures, this is a very young snake and pretty small. I'm not an expert, but I heard that these young snakes are the most dangerous as they get scared easy, and when they bite they don't control the amount of poison and dispense everything they have on you. My wife didn't even see it, and I had to show her as she was going to step very close to it. It was just sitting there in the middle of the trail warming up in the sun.

Em apenas alguns minutos de caminhada, tivemos um encontro interessante com uma cobra cascavel. Essas cobras são muito comuns aqui, e você vê placas em todas as trilhas alertando as pessoas sobre o perigo dessas cobras. Elas são extremamente venenosas. Como você pode ver nas fotos, essa é uma cobra muito jovem e bem pequena. Não sou especialista, mas ouvi dizer que essas cobras jovens são as mais perigosas, pois se assustam com facilidade e, quando mordem, não controlam a quantidade de veneno e injetam tudo o que têm em você. Minha esposa nem viu a cobra, e eu tive que mostrar a ela, pois ela ia pisar muito próximo dela. Ela estava no meio da trilha, aquecendo-se no sol.

We left our little friend there, and it wasn't there anymore when we came back, hope it didn't surprise anyone in the trail. And we kept going towards the waterfalls. Most of the trail is on open fields very exposed to the sun, so I imagine that in the summer you need to bring a lot of water, even though it's a small hike. The parts in the shade were nice to cool down with the cold breeze. One more thing you can see in the pictures is how everything is still so dry, even with the rain we got in the past weeks, there is still very little green. This has been a very dry season, and I think everyone heard about the fires in California. We had no rain for many months, and we finally got a little bit this month of February, and as you can see, there is a lot of that dry grass on the side of the trail, that is very flammable.

Deixamos nosso amiguinho lá, e ele não estava mais lá quando voltamos, espero que não tenha surpreendido ninguém na trilha. E continuamos em direção às cachoeiras. A maior parte da trilha é em campos abertos muito expostos ao sol, então imagino que no verão seja necessário levar muita água, mesmo sendo uma caminhada pequena. As partes na sombra eram agradáveis para se refrescar com a brisa fria. Outra coisa que você pode ver nas fotos é como tudo ainda está muito seco, mesmo com a chuva que tivemos nas últimas semanas, ainda há muito pouco verde. Esta tem sido uma estação muito seca, e acho que todos ouviram falar dos incêndios na Califórnia. Não choveu por muitos meses e finalmente tivemos um pouco de chuva em fevereiro, e finalmente conseguimos um pouco neste mês de fevereiro e, como você pode ver, tinha muito desse mato seco na lateral da trilha, que são muito inflamáveis.

We finally made it to the waterfalls, it's not that big, and there was not a very good angle to get a picture facing the waterfall. But you can still have an idea of what this spot looks like. As you can see in the sign, please don't poop on the waterfall 😂.
When we got there, there were a lot of kids playing in the water, we stopped for a bit, took some pictures and started our hike back out. This was a super fun little hike, that took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes total. Definitely going back there again some other time.

Finalmente chegamos na cachoeira, que não é muito grande e não havia um ângulo muito bom para tirar uma foto de frente para a cachoeira. Mas você ainda pode ter uma ideia de como é esse local. Como você pode ver na placa, por favor, não faça cocô na cachoeira 😂.
Quando chegamos lá, havia muitas crianças brincando na água, paramos um pouco, tiramos algumas fotos e começamos nossa caminhada de volta. Essa foi uma caminhada superdivertida, que levou cerca de 1 hora e 45 minutos no total. Com certeza voltaremos lá outra vez.
