A bit of foraging

The mountain bike trail in the local park doubles as a hiking trail. Hikers considerately step to the side when cyclists come through. This trail is close to town and is often rather busy.

That is why I am surprised that no one had harvested these beautiful golden oyster mushrooms that were growing right beside the trail!

I grew up in a family of gardeners and learned early that some of the best food doesn't come from the grocery store. Freezing, canning and pickling kept us busy during the summer and fall.

Walks in the woods provided so many free foods to be foraged. Blackberries, wild onions and ramps, wild plums, gooseberries and elderberries and of course, mushrooms!

Golden Oyster Mushrooms

Pleurotus citrinopileatus

I loved learning about the sustainable food sources all around us and was happy that I could pass the knowledge along to my daughter.

Chicken of the Woods Mushrooms

Laetiporus sulphureus

Although I am surprised that so many people passed these by, I also grateful that they are now in the freezer, ready to be enjoyed later. They are so much tastier than anything you can buy in the grocery store!

Nature provides tasty and free for the taking things. Glad you found some treasures and have them for consumption at another time.

It was a bountiful walk in the woods!
And a good reason to keep some zip lock bags in the daypack!

Ohhh!! How amazing to find so many mushrooms 🤩😍, I’m so jealous—I’ve never been that lucky @melinda010100, and I’ve walked through quite a few forests in my city.

The pictures are spectacular—I saved them to my gallery, my friend. Greetings and a lovely day to you 🤗😊🙏🏻👏

It is simply a matter of being in the right place at the right time, I think.
These are all mobile photos from Pixel phone. I'm glad you liked them.

That's awesome! I wish I had that to pick here in my area. Of course, fresh natural food is way much better than anything you can buy at the grocery store. Natural, organic, and so very healthy.

Amazing discovery, golden oyster mushrooms are delicious cooked with Indomie, the taste is addictive😋. I often pick mushrooms like this, but here the color is mostly white.

Good to hear.
I went out a few days ago to see if any mushrooms were growing in our forest. None so far… will have to wait a bit longer.

There really are no poisonous look alikes for these delicious treats, but you are right. People just assume that if it doesn't come from the store it might kill you!

Not being a mushroom eater or fan, I can only enjoy the beauty of those mushrooms in the photograph. I have zero knowledge about its beneficial sides!

Awesome find of nature's bounty, free mushrooms are awesome! I don't know enough about the local ones here to safely harvest any though. Smart move to freeze them up for later use!

Freezing works quite well, I was actually rather surprised. . And Google Lens works well for me for ID ing. It also tells me if there are any look alikes that I need to be aware of. Technology has so many awesome uses!

Hello, happy day.
The pictures of the bike park are really beautiful.
And I am very glad that you know part of the wild and natural foods that nature gives.
Here, most of the young people of the city do not know everything about food and medicinal plants, and just like there, we are surrounded by them.
I hope you enjoy the mushrooms.
I made some some time ago, since we don't eat them much, battered in bechamel sauce and used them as a filling, for some Swiss chard and lettuce gratin that I made.
That was a meal, that I made for a vegetarian friend and she quite liked it.
My best wishes.

Oh my! fresh and natural mushrooms are often tastier. I think they were left there, possibly because people do not know much about them or they were in a haste to get to their destinations.
Lucky you to have foraged them. I'd do same if I had found them too.
