Daddy, I am really nervous about my operation tomorrow.

The Little Lady looked up at me from her bed, her eyes wide with a hint of fear like a woodlouse exposed to the sun.

Hey, chicken pie. Don't you worry about a thing. It is relatively minor, they do these operations all the time. You will be fine.

I nodded wisely, knowing that she would be fine. I mean, these things were quite routine. I was sure all would be well.

She was going in to get her tonsils and adenoids out at the same time. For some reason, the Doctor who had been fussing about her Glue ear for a while had decided that cutting the fuck out of her inner neck might teach her ears a bit of a lesson.

Biology, huh?

So it was she had been booked in for an op and we were all doing our best to reassure her that everything would be ok and that we would spoil her rotten with chocolate, screens and ice cream after the event during her recovery.

She had been weirdly calm about it all. Only now, at bedtime two nights before her op it was all coming out.

I reached out and patted her arm in a way that I hoped evoked patience and understanding.

Can I ask something...?

She said quietly, almost shyly.

Of course darling, you know you can always ask me anything.

I smiled as I said that like a starfish eating the nipples of a drowned man.
That's right mofos, starfish eat meat. Bet you didn't know that eh? Maybe that will make you think twice about getting your naughty bits out in the Starfish enclosure at the local Sea-life Sex Club. Not to be confused with the Seal-Life Sex Club, that's a whole lotta different, noisier for a start.

You know the anaesthetic... Well, I was wondering... What if I don't wake up after it?

She looked at me, her eyes brimming with fear-tears.

I made to laugh and reassure her with my honeyed words but I couldn't. I found myself assailed with a wave of grief at the very thought of my beautiful little lass not waking up after an operation that I had merrily signed her up for.

I gulped a couple of times and tried to speak.

Daddy?

She looked at me as if I were a fig that no one knew how to eat.

My mouth gaped like a mad fish once more as I attempted to tell her everything was going to be ok. Then I hiccuped and suddenly riding on the back of the hiccup a cross between a massive burp and a sob of grief burst forth from my mouth.

REEEEAAAA-UUURP-UURRRP-UUURRRP

DADDY?! What was that?!

She laughed and attempted to punch me on the chest as if I were a hell dog trying to climb out of a drain.

Um, I don't quite know. I think it was a burp?

I regained the power of speech just in time to sound like a clueless moron.

You are silly.

She giggled and flumped down in her bed and dragged the quilt up to her chin.

G'night, love you.

She murmured, half smiling on her way to the land of nod.

Goodnight, lass. Love you too.

I retreated from the room and inwardly thanked my body for saving me from the not waking up question as I closed the door. Fucking hell, at least she seemed to have forgotten about it with the noise of my mad grief burp.

But crikey, now I don't think I will be able to sleep.

Tis tomorrow. It is a quiet house today of everyone just waiting. It is day surgery so it will all be fine just horrible thinking of your little ones going through anything bad!

If they do general Anesthesia, then it is probably better. I very recently went through it, so I remember, or don't remember anything.

It's a general which I think will be better. As I have told her she wouldn't want to remember some big apes hands in her mouth burning out the back of her throat!

I have had a general a few times, the lack of memory is reassuring!

That’s very good.

I can tell you one thing the thing that hurt the most after my surgery was my teeth! So after I woke up and my surgeon came to visit me, I asked: you did open up the back of my neck and cut my spine, but why my teeth hurt!?

Answer was: Lol! You bite into your restraints while I gave you electric shock into your Spine!

They were testing if I was alive and have all my bodily functions! :)

Good lord man. That sounds almost mediaeval!!

The worst apparently from this one is making them wear toast before they go home to make sure that they can swallow ok. I had my tonsils out when I was young and I am pretty sure I remember that bit was the worst of all!

It's worse!

I also have various tubes going into my mouth and a steel frame that hold my back of the head and pushes down on my shoulders to stretch my neck as I lay face down. Due to the shock my whole body bounced on the operating table!!

Fairly graphic as I imagine it! :)

That does sound fairly graphic. It must also be slightly surreal to imagine it happening to you and not having any awareness of it. Apart from the pain afterwards obvs. I take it you are still doing well? It seems like quite the monumentous op!

Zero pain and no medication now.

I am doing great. Doctors, family all surprised

Saved by a mutant burp.

Operations are always a little scary but I'm sure everything will go fine. Sounds like a pretty routine surgery. Remember to film her crazy rambling from waking up from the anesthesia wearing off. That's the thing to do now adays

It is very routine so I am fairly ok with it. Just dont like to dwell on it too much!

Tha crazy rambling is something i have warned her about. Oh the times I have woken up and the nurses have been laughing at me. Yeek

Yeah, I can see it still being a little nerve racking.

That's funny. I imagine that you would say some wild stuff in that instance.

God bless to the operation of your little lady. She is too brave to face the operation. 😊 You and your wife are too brave too for letting your child on that kind of operation. 😊😊 Fighting!

I hope it goes well (I'm sure it will)! I had the exact same operation back in the medieval days of the 1970's, when I was five, and it cleared up my chronic earaches almost instantly. Back then they'd bribe you by telling you you could have all the ice cream you could eat after the procedure. I think I polished off about ten ice cream cups before I was discharged. : )

0

avatar

Thats the bribing that we are currently doing!

Yeah, that is the hope of it. By removing the giant adenoids and tonsils they hope to have a clearer airway for the glue in her glue ear to drain away. I am heartened to hear it worked as intended with you!

(Edited)

It's apparently a timeless bribing technique. : ) Totally worked in my case, they also put "tubes" in my ears during that procedure to help with drainage. It was my first time spending the night away from home and I kept climbing out of the bed and trying to escape the hospital.

0

They were going to do that with my daughter too but she has a huge issue with ear wax and they worked that some would get through the tubes and cause an infection in the inner ear.

Still, two ops to help with it all should do a good bit of difference!!

Greetings @meesterboom ,

We are all in tears now.

What to say? You tell her the powerful true story of long ago...about how God loves us everyone and provided a way of eternal life through His Son Christ Jesus. For God loved the world so much that He gave His uniquely born Son, so that anyone who believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. And that should anything go awry, she would be with the only wise, benevolent, perfect God of the Universe until her Mum and Dad came to be with her there.

That is what Bleujay would say to any child with such a beautiful query...You have a thinker. You knew that already. Your little one is in my thoughts.

Kindest Regards to you and your good lady,

Bleujay

You not going to sleep after that..., trust all goes well, glue ear resolved.

My friend, you'll see that everything will be fine, I know very well what it feels like in these situations.

When they have to do something to your child, whether it's simple or not, it still brings anxiety and thoughts; let alone in the person who has to do that thing.

Optimism and positive thinking, go on!

I hug you!

It does bring out the anxiety as you will be well familiar with. I do agree though, some the dark areas with positivity!! All will be well!

I had the same op when I was about 7 (in olden days when they just gave you a stiff drink). I'm not sure if I worried too much about it.

Kids are pretty tough, but they will worry about new experiences.

A stiff drink, lol. Wasn't that the recovery bit too see if you could be discharged? 🤣🤣

Yeah, it's pretty common asked I am sure it's an every day thing for them and kids are resilient as anything. I am sure she will bounce back within a day or two!

I think I've only been put under for two operations (maybe another for dental as a kid) plus a few on local anaesthetic.

I was under loads as a kid for dental stuff but as an adult only a couple of times too. One time they gave me a nerve block on my foot and I wish they had put me out because the tugging on it was awful!

Having my mouth numbed for wisdom tooth removal was 'interesting'. I've also had a couple of lumbar punctures (spinal tap!). Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. Be glad not to be born before anaesthetic.

I had a mad numbing for a wisdom tooth. It was good in the respect that I really couldn't feel a thing.

Lumbar punctures, they sound scary!

It would be a nightmare to be born in the time before anaesthetic!

Entering an operating room is terrifying, I remember it and hear my heart throbbing in my throat. We are overcome by anxiety at first, but thought can overcome that fear. Keeping a calm mind will help you come out of it all just fine.

Ice cream will always be a nice reward 😋

0

Awww, what a frightening thing! It's her first brush with her own mortality...no wonder she is questioning the waking up part lol. You approached that question with juuuust the right amount of tender concern and slapstick humour lol. It did the trick. Will keep her and your whole family in my thoughts, she will fly through and be asking for more ice cream in no time!

0

It is her first brush! Lordy, I don't like it. She has become all cool about it again. I think I have the fear more than her now. I have the ice cream bought and much chocolate so I can bring her out of feeling pain afterwards. Although we have plenty drugs too 😀😀

0

You better calm down or you'll have to be taking those drugs lol. She will have earned all of the pampering you can give her for a few days at least. Maybe get the little Boom involved so he doesn't feel left out...he'll be wanting ice cream too lolol.

LOL.....

That is one advantage I suppose of you always being a silly willy. That one sound, which I am sure she thought you did on purpose, assured her that YOU were sure all was fine.

I bet you are contemplating answering all future questions the same way.

Good luck; I hope the little lady has a successful op and speedy recovery filled with Ice cream dreams. Get some Ice cream for yourself as well, You deserve it for handling this all like a champ!

...wow mate. this one took me for a loop. It's like watching my favorite comedy actor seamlessly transition to drama, seeing a whole new facet to someone I already thought was in its perfect final form - When she asked, I thought you were gonna make her laugh - and when you couldn't, I legitimately choked up. Turns out you're able to put your literary skills to work in whatever tone and voice inspires you...You already had my attention and admiration, I'm not sure what else this little drummer boy has to left to give...please accept this humble comment as a [Layer X] token of my respect.

Also, I will hold your little chicken pie in my thoughts, I hope and expect she will do just great!

She was going in to get her tonsils and adenoids out at the same time.

Hope she will be doing fine after this, I had my son's adenoids removed last year, but the doctor advised not to remove tonsils as it was not necessary, even though its a common practice to remove them at one go.

To be honest I was not entirely convinced on why they were doing the tonsils as well but as you say, it seemed to be a while we are here attitude. She is out more and happy. She's quite resilient about it all!

Oh man, I remember my daughter having tonsil removal surgery. It is with these procedures that, as a parent, you'd rather swap places, if that were possible.

It is an honest direct question, that she asked, but surely one you do not want to think about. Especially if you think in vivid imagery right away...

Standard procedures, those operations, but it is nice when they are finally set and done.

It'll be alright, good healing for the little lady!

Damn I wish the doctors don’t try to just cut things out like that. Our body puts them there for a reason.. lol

It’s so challenging as a parent when you get these questions. My son went through a phase where he would wake up crying because he had a dream he was in a grave and asked me if he was going to die. I fucking lost it when he asked me the first time. We aren’t prepared for this type of heart wrenching innocence!

Hope the little squirt is back to normal. Make sure to keep her extra hydrated and full of vitamins since she’s missing a few lymphatic organs. Gotta compensate!
