Some people connect more strongly face to face. Some people connect more strongly word to word. If I was at something like HIVE fest, I’d be standing in the corner, talking to nobody, not networking, and would probably feel very unfulfilled and alone in a room, just like I do at other social events and seminars.

I’m a deeply introverted person and not actively social in large groups. I much prefer the chaotic, free-flowing conversation around a bar room table, or at a friend’s kitchen bench, side to side, fist deep in cooking ingredients.

I like to, and prefer to connect with people through the words I use. It takes me a long time to feel comfortable in the presence of someone else, but online, I’ve always been able to engage and have conversations because I know that I don’t need to worry about things like eye-contact, ensuring the pitch of my voice is correct, and worrying about whether people are looking for bits of left over spinach in my beard.

In text, I just communicate better.

My beard is a magnetic collector of food bits - so I know that social stress when I discover that I have ravioli sauce in my beard

I always assumed that on a digital social network, we were all interacting "digitally". But I have come to see that (at the "top" at least), there is more to the story. These guys are flying to Kuala Lampur to drink beers with each other.

Oh crap, now I gotta drink beer too? And fly on a plane? I like either of those things less than feeling awkward in a social setting.

On the topic of beards, I judge the quality of a food place by the volume of napkins they give me. If they don't give me more than a non-bearded customer, they're not getting me to come back again. Call it petty, but cater to your customer's needs.

My needs are more napkins than the smooth-skins!

I would be in the corner with you and soon we would be giggling about people and The People would be wondering why we are laughing and wish they were at the "fun" table......

Then we would go shoot some pool somewhere.

:D

With any luck, the billiard won't leap unexplained off the table and directly into my left eye socket. That would be most unfortunate.

We once had a small HIVE meet at a billiard hall down here in Adelaide, to catch up with someone who was visting from another state. I don't think I am remembered for my prowess hitting spheres with a stick.

I'm much better at conversation, just so long as it isn't spontaneously mundane.
