RE: I Am All In Favor Of Conscription

I do not agree with conscription. If a nation isn't able to raise a standing army of sufficient strength through its own virtue, depriving members of their freedom to serve a mandatory term within it doesn't make that nation any better.

I would have agreed with this maybe 20 years ago, but the way the world has evolved over the last decade society in many counties is being drawn into something far more sinister and conflicts will happen internally. Sadly I see no other alternative outcome.

The world is certainly changing, and the pace of that change is increasingly rapid, I definitely agree. However, I do not think "boots on the ground" is the most efficient form of conscription, which is what a lot of people think about when it comes to the term.

There's a lot of other roles that are required for a nation to function, and a return to protectionism and self-reliance for a lot of nations needs a lot more man power than what many established nations are contributing.

For example, Australia has a stockpile of fuel that would not last the nation longer than a few months. At the same time, it has no real capacity to refine oil, importing the vast bulk of it.

From my "Australian" perspective, Australia's manufacturing base would "benefit" from "conscription" far more than putting people through boot camp.

100% there is more required than just military and I wish there was more self reliance as that is a prime weakness right there. At least you have refineries because in SA they import diesel and petrol as final products because the 4 refineries we once had are no longer in service. If someone blocked the ports the country would come to a stand still within 4 weeks.

Its crazy. Even if you have a refinery, you still need the raw crude to make the fuel. According to a google search, Australia imports 83% of crude. So, in a situation where that import stream no longer exists, only a fifth of the mobility would be reasonably possible.

Pretty crazy. People need to walk more :D
