The School Break Dilemma
Oh yes, the school break is here! As a father who usually takes the kids to school every day, this is a relief, right? Not quite. We are glad there's no morning rush now. But, we soon found a new issue: keeping our kids from getting too bored.
I was looking forward to having some good time for myself this holiday, but nope. My two school-age kids are already restless, and it’s just a week since their classes ended. It’s funny how fast “no school” turns into “I’m bored” when there’s nothing planned for their days.
Our kids were used to busy days at school. They played with friends, sang songs, listened to stories, and did all kinds of learning stuff. Now at home, they expect us to keep them just as busy. What pressure!
I see that my kids miss the lively, fun times from school. They want to play, but they want structured games like at school. They want someone to lead songs, which is not my thing. It’s surprising how much they miss stories and even their homework.
You might think, “Just let them watch TV or use tablets.” I’ve tried that. But here’s what I found: screens don’t cut it. They might be quiet for a bit, but they can’t replace the active fun of school. Soon boredom strikes back, and we’re back to square one.
This is a reality check. There’s no one at home like their teachers or friends to keep them busy. As parents, we have to do many things at once. play, teach, and do more.
I'm feeling lost already, to be honest. How can we make sure our kids are busy during breaks but also keep our cool? The key is to mix the right kinds of fun and learning to keep their minds busy.
As I write this, I’m thinking of ideas. Maybe I need to make a light schedule mixing calm activities with active ones. Or set up play dates so they can see their friends. Or maybe try to learn some simple songs for family sing-alongs.
This break has shown me that parenting is never on a break just because school’s out. It’s a full-time gig, and now more than ever, we need to be creative to keep our kids happy and learning, even at home.
So here’s to all parents facing this struggle. We're in it together against the “I’m bored” complaints, and maybe catching a few moments of that dream break. Wish me luck now, as I think I hear the kids asking me ‘what are we doing tonight?’

In my day we used to go outside and play football or games outside. Now kids don't do that, they just want to cause trouble. Over here the big thing they do in the summer holidays is start fires!
Good luck with them, why not try and get them a project to work on, and maybe give them a reward at the end of it?
Kids can be so chaotic indeed, and they don't care if anyone gets offended by their actions.
Your suggestion of a project for them can work especially when it comes with a reward. That's a brilliant idea.
Yeah especially if it something that can help you!
Yeah, kids these days 🤦🏻♂️
I wonder if any of the kids nowadays would survive just a week back in the days 😂

Yeah it makes you laugh and then the Gen Z saying there has never been a generation that had such troubles as them 🤣
I'm not all that familiar with what gen z actually is 😂
That makes sense. Not too much up to date with what the different generations are called, as you may have figured 😂

Yeah me neither, that was gemini who gave me the definition.
Do you have the pro subscription to the Google AI?
Yeah ... but ... it's because I have a Google Pixel Pro 9
Right! You mentioned that a few months back 😃 I forgot.
Do you also use the Google Flow service?
I have made a few videos with that. Very impressive, just too bad they can only be 8 seconds. Takes a while to create a movie like that, but I'm willing to try 😆

Good old fire starters... What a healthy hobby for the soon to be psychotic arsonists... That's really too bad, it's a horrible thing. We used to go outside and play ball. Ride our bikes, and I grew up near mountains so we would go hiking a lot of the time. The world is a different place now and not always for the better!
It is the in thing to do now. They share videos with their mates of the fires.
I know what I would do with them and their parents.
I'm an old school kind of parent in many ways.
Just because the kids are bored doesn't mean they need to have stuff planned. I often tell my daughter to use her imagination. Unfortunately she's an only child, so there's no one around to play with. She often ask to have a friend over or if she can go there, and of course I allow that. Well, most of the time anyway. If I can't be arsed, then I'm saying no.
Her friends love being here, they think I'm cool. I think it's because I'm pretty laid back and let the kids be kids. I tell them to be careful if they start doing something that most consider 'dangerous', but I let them do it. Sometimes they hurt themselves, and when the storm has settled, I tell them that can happen when they do whatever they did. Part of their learning, IMO.
Being bored is also healthy sometimes. If nothing else, you can try guiding them through a relaxation.
Tell them to lay down, hands on their stomach, and feel their hands rising as they take a breath in and how they fall when they exhale.
Then go on to feel what parts of the body touch the surface and what parts doesn't. Is there a different feeling on the places that touch? Etc etc.
There are countless possibilities.
IMO, the worst thing to do is to give in and plan their day for them.
