The Mess we Create and Complain about

I visited my friend early this morning at his new place. The location of the place is such that it is connected to the main road by a small narrow street. As I entered that street, I slowed down my pace.

The entire place was littered with garbage. There were plastic bags, empty sachets, food left-overs, and plastic or glass bottles everywhere. You could barely find a clean path to step on. The place didn’t look like a street where people passes every day. The place looked abandoned, dirty, and neglected.

What really got to me was that the people who live there are the same people throwing the trash.

They walk past it every day. Their children see it. Visitors go through it. Yet no one seems concerned enough to stop and say, “This is wrong.”

The most shocking thing is that there is a place allocated for the dumping of waste nearby, a place that is fenced and obviously meant for waste dumping. It’s not far. It’s not hidden. In fact, it’s only a step away. Yet, these people still choose to dump their waste right on the narrow street.

It's like once someone drops something, it somehow becomes sign language for everyone else to do the same. One plastic bag becomes ten, ten becomes a pile, and before you know it, it's like the whole street has become a dumping ground.

And besides, it is not even in that place alone. I am witnessing this phenomenon around many areas of the city. If there is dirt somewhere, everyone will feel free to add to it. No one would want to be the cause of breaking the chain.

Later on, if there is flooding due to blocked drainage systems, or if there is an issue with the environment, everybody starts pointing fingers at the government. Certainly, the government has something to do with these things. But What about us who lives in these areas?

How hard is it to carry your waste to the appropriate place? Sometimes the environmental problems we have is not because there are no facilities, but a lack of care.

Walking on this street today forced me to reflect a lot. We always complain about our surroundings, yet we contribute to its destruction by our own doing. If we cannot take care of our surrounding, what will we do to improve our communities?
