Scam Alert on Hive

An image generated with AI
There is something going on the Hive platform that many people are yet to be informed about. Although we talk about how secured the Hive platform is, scammers still find ways to infiltrate the platform to steal people's assets. Recently, there has been a scam post in the form of comments tagging Hive users with a message that they have been selected to receive a Hive airdrop. The message comes with a link that the person tagged is instructed to click to check the airdrop and claim it.
When I saw the message because I was tagged, I thought it was something genuine and I clicked on the link to see what it was all about. The link leads to a page that looks exactly like hive.blog with Hive Signer asking for active keys to claim the airdrop. At first glance, everything looks authentic. The page design is familiar. The layout resembles what we use daily. That is how these scams work; they imitate what we already knew and use to.
But let's be very careful; Hive has never given an airdrop and will not do so.There are no surprise token distributions, no random selections for an airdrop, and no reward programs that require you to submit your active key on external websites. Any post or comment that tagged you and claiming you have been selected for a Hive airdrop is a scam.
After looking carefully at the website, I felt something was wrong and think about it. Since when does Hive randomly select users in comment sections for free tokens? Since when does claiming a reward require exposing your active key? That is when it became obvious that the link was malicious.
Scammers are now using comment sections to tag multiple users at once. When you see your username alongside others, it creates a false sense of legitimacy. You assume it must be real because it is public. But that is exactly the trap.
Your active key is powerful. It is not for logging into random websites. It is not for claiming bonuses. It gives permission to move funds and make financial transactions. Once someone has your active key, they can control your assets.
If you see such a comment:
- Do not click the link.
- Do not enter any private key.
- Check the URL carefully.
- Report the comment as spam.
- Warn others.
After realizing what happened, I immediately changed my master password through hive.blog. Changing your master password automatically generates a new set of keys — owner, active, posting, and memo keys. Many users do not know this. If you change your password, you must retrieve your new keys and update them in your apps like Keychain or Ecency.
Hive is a decentralized Blockchain platform, which means the security of your account is all on you. The security of your account is your personal responsibility. If your keys are stolen there's nothing anyone else can do about it because only you have access to your account. The platform itself is secured, but scammers can still create accounts like everyone else and look for ignorant people to scam.
This is a warning to everyone, Hive has never done an airdrop and will not do so in the future. If you ever see a post or a comment claiming you have been selected for an airdrop or free Hive tokens, it's probably a scam.
Stay vigilant and protect your keys. Also help warn others about this scam syndicate.
