Raising My Own Chickens with Some Hard Experiences

We all know the situation in Nigeria when Christmas is approaching; people start talking about how much chicken would cost during the festivities. It is quite hilarious how chicken turns out to be such a valuable item during the festive season, and that is exactly what made me think of a different approach this year. Rather than waiting for the December rush and paying higher prices for Christmas chickens so I planned on raising my own birds in a small poultry behind my apartment.
I was totally clueless when I went for this escapade. On the first week of August, and with no experience, I constructed a small poultry house. Initially, I targeted 20 birds but due to reasons that I cannot really tell (maybe it was fear), I only got 10 day-old chicks.

You can imagine how how easy I thought it would be; feed the birds, watch them grow, and voila, Christmas dinner sorted. And, maybe make some extra cash selling the ones we didn't need. Sounds simple and straightforward, right? Well, life had other plans.
The first few days were a bundle of emotions, anxiety and excitement at the same time. The little birds wouldn't stop chirping and demanded attention at all times, and we tried our best to give them the food that we thought was right. But this is the point of my mistake and inexperience, I didn't know at all that proper ventilation was even more important than feeding them.
One morning I went to the chicken house to see how they are doing. Three of my little chicks were on the ground, dead. I felt so sad, but it that was only the beginning of what was coming. In a very short time, the death toll was raised to seven. It came to be that the sudden temperature changes which was either too hot during the day and too cold at night, especially when it was raining were a reason for these little creatures to become fragile and die.
So my poultry business turned out to be a dream that went away in a blink of an eye, with only three chickens still alive. My failures have led to some of life’s most precious lessons. And raising chickens is not as easy as simply scattering some chicken feed and staring at the sky. These small creatures need proper nurturing, an appropriate setting, and care from someone familiar with how these small beings feel.

As for the three chickens still alive, they are growing well, and my hopes have changed. I’ve stopped thinking about the prospects of making profits and have started thanking God that these birds will survive until the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Interestingly, even with the three birds, I could still break even if I decide selling them during the festive seasons.
All in all, this year I will be celebrating Christmas with a chicken reared in my own backyard along with some hard earned lessons. And yes, next time will certainly be different. After all, it is said that experience is the best teacher and the best experiences are always born out of adversity.
