Echoes from the Past

Today, I had time off from my schedule to think about my life journey and most especially my childhood memories that in a big way contributed to the person I am today. My childhood experiences were not an enjoyable story to narrate, but it was one that was full of life lessons.

There is adversity in misfortune, just as there is benefit in pain. Being born poor to a family impacts one's life even into old age. It may be bad or very bad for some people, but to the wise, they could learn valuable lessons from their little childhood experiences that helped them become good and successful people in their adult age. What I can share with you about myself is that my difficult childhood was the learning ground which gave me the tools that I used to develop myself.

One of the things I picked up as a kid was the notion of self-sacrifice. I was brought up in a little, poor home, and with some of our brothers and sisters we were always starving. Getting food three times a day was always a problem. Most of the time we had to retire to bed on an empty stomach, our common food was cassava stuffed with palm kernels-a type food you can only find in a village.

Our mother has to go without food more times than one can imagine due to this shortage of food. She is the one who makes the most sacrifices for us children to eat, while she lies hungry in bed. I was taught eating less is the best thing to do, when I was still very young, so that my younger brother and sister would have more to eat. Soon, this practice extended to friends and strangers, making me a helper of those worse off than myself.

Well, all this selfless lesson has now grown into my habit in life whereby I can help other people without expecting the same from them. That is how I have learned to put the interests of others before mine, something that at times makes my wife marvel if I am not hurting myself.

People often try to put a smile on their kids' faces by giving them things to make them happy. A rich father or mother will tend to buy something expensive to boost their children's morale at least. Far from it for a poor one. Even though we were down and broke and had no textbooks, mum would always remind us, ‘Your education is all we’ve got to make it’. So she continues to push us to read seriously. If I’m not first in class, she threatens to beat me.

We had time to study all the time–there was no TV or radio in our house. With our mom around, we rarely venture out into the street to other kids playing. This helps in setting good grades for me and almost always coming first in the class. This kind of motivation helps build on the lessons, and the cycle goes on till today.

The best thing one may get from being poor is self-motivation. Many people wait for others to motivate them, but with me, I can motivate myself much better when frustrations, stress, anxiety, and waging internal wars in my mind to focus on my goals.

Whether rich or poor, each individual's upbringing experiences mold them into the person they are today. Just take a minute to reflect on your childhood experiences; you will amaze yourself with how much these experiences have impacted who you are today.
