Today, I want to talk to my guest author friends about something that I'm sure has crossed many of our minds, or at least something we've felt the effects of without realizing it.
This is sure to intrigue you. No, I'm talking about those little clips, those short videos that don't turn off our brains and keep us glued to a screen for hours on end.
You and I know that this is nothing new. Technology continues to advance by leaps and bounds, and so does the way we consume content. Currently, the content we consume the most is those short videos, as they have conquered a huge space in our digital lives. It is very easy to understand why, as they are accessible, fast, and designed specifically to capture our attention in an almost addictive way.
- But how many of us stop to think about how this form of consumption is influencing our brains and our attention span?
And ultimately, who asks themselves if this affects the way they are and interact with the world?
I am speaking from a humanistic perspective, as it is crucial that we look beyond the surface. Don't you see that our brain is a marvel of evolution, capable of deep thought, immense empathy, and creativity, but at the same time also incredibly adaptable? When we constantly expose it to fragmented, short-lived stimuli, we are training our brain to prefer these immediate stimuli. It's as if someone were telling you that you don't need to concentrate for very long. Here's something new, just a few seconds away. If we think this way and look at it from this point of view, we can recognize that from an early age, prolonged concentration is the main thing that humans must learn to master.
This issue has several implications, because if we think about our ability to concentrate, tell me, have you noticed how difficult it is to have a conversation with someone for a long time? Have you realized how difficult it is to read a book or watch a movie without interruptions? Right now, it is becoming increasingly difficult to do these kinds of things without the temptation to check our cell phones. It's not that we are less intelligent or less capable; it's that our brains are getting used to to that "next, please" that we constantly maintain. The instant gratification that these videos offer us is undermining our patience for processes that require more time and effort, such as learning, creative problem solving, and above all, introspection.
Incidentally, if we look at this whole dilemma from the point of view of our mental health and our own well-being, the constant search for the new and the viral generates a feeling of anxiety and an insatiable need to see more.
Little by little, we are losing our humanity and our ability to feel empathy for other human beings. This is not at all about demonizing these videos, which also have their positive side for entertainment or quick information.
But we do need to pause and reflect. We have the ability to choose how we want our minds to function, how we want to invest our time, and how we want to invest our attention, because this is what will create memories that, I assure you, will be the only valuable thing we have in our old age.
