Venezuelan culture is rich in expressions that sometimes sound humorous or everyday but contain profound historical and social values.
The Voice of a People

The history of many of us is written with battles, dreams, and the unbreakable will of a people, and this goes far beyond books, as the true Venezuelan spirit is found in the words, sayings, and phrases that have resonated from the halls of the liberation movement to the most humble corners of the country.
Today, I will be exploring and sharing with you some of the famous phrases that reflect values and emphasize where we come from.
In this post, we explore how these "famous phrases", both from heroes and from everyday life, reflect the values that define us: morality, resilience, and immense kindness.

- I'm going to start by talking about one of the fundamental pillars, which is morality and education, as the liberator wanted to leave as his legacy.
Here, I touched on the subject of historical values. I can't begin without mentioning and giving credit to the man who I feel is the foundation of this nation, as his vision was not only military but also deeply moral and educational.
This man will be remembered for many years to come, as I am talking about the liberator Simón Bolívar.
One of the phrases that quickly comes to mind is what the liberator said: "Morality and enlightenment are our first necessities."
This phrase has a value associated with the morality of education and a civic vision, as Bolívar understood that freedom is not sustained only by weapons but by citizens of integrity and education.
This phrase, which was fundamental in his Angostura speech in 1819, emphasizes that morality, ethics, justice, honesty, enlightenment, education, knowledge, and reason are the pillars on which a republic must be built. And in the current context, this phrase still reminds us that the best investment for the future is ethical and academic training, since honesty and knowledge are our primary needs.

We are not known for our ability to get up and improvise with ingenuity and thus face adversity with a unique mixture of optimism and effort. This is encapsulated in one of the most iconic sayings:
"Échale Pichón!"
This is an expression of popular origin, but it is a battle cry, a pat on the back, and a national mantra. Although I cannot find any information about its origin, its universal meaning is "try hard" or "do your best." It can also be said to be synonymous with "don't give up" and "go for it."
In a context where we talk about greatness and values, there is a popular expression that says:
- "It's better than bread."
This reflects great hospitality, solidarity, and simplicity. Since bread and arepas are the center of the table in Venezuela, they are synonymous with sustenance and simplicity, and when we say that a person or something is better than bread, we are giving the highest compliment.
To say that this phrase and popular words are much more than that, I can define or compare them to a capsule of our deepest values, starting from that point where I spoke of morality and the enlightenment that our liberator taught us.
