what up gang
So ya boy has been on the hunt for some cheap hardware... not for mining, don't get it twisted... just for building out some personal infrastructure. You gotta own your stack top to bottom if you can. Came across this absolute unit of a server, a Dell R410, for 35 Canadian bucks. Thirty five. Couldn't say no to that eh.
This thing is a relic lol. It's a 1U rack server so it's long and heavy and loud as hell. Sounds like a jet engine taking off when you first boot it up. Definitely not somethin you want in your living room but for the basement workshop it's perfect... But I got it in my living room 🤣 it's actually not too bad more like a drone when it starts but then it's just hums along at a reasonable level unless it's really working hard , for the price of a couple of fancy coffees I got a piece of enterprise hardware. It's old, sure, but it's got dual Xeons and got 48gb RAM can have even more. It's a physical asset, somethin I actually own, not some monthly bill to Amazon for a VPS that they can shut off whenever they feel like it. That's the key difference folks... ownership.
Spent the weekend gettin it set up. Wiped it clean and threw Ubuntu Server on there. The install was pretty painless which was a suprise. Then got Docker running on it, and finally n8n. If you don't know n8n it's basically a self-hosted Zapier... lets you automate workflows between different apps and services. Super powerful stuff and now I don't have to pay some sleaze ball company a monthly subscription for it. Control your own stack... that's the name of teh game.
The whole point of this project is to build out some custom tools. I'm gonna look into using it to track some on-chain data, maybe pull stuff from different APIs and consolidate it for my own uses like spin up some dev environments on it and play around with building some scripts for the chain . Just having a dedicated box that's always on and that I control opens up a lot of possibilities. It's a slow grind but way more satisfying than just clicking buttons on someone else's web UI.
So yeah, for 35 bucks I got a piece of kit that'll let me be a little more self-sovereign in the digital world. It ain't pretty but it gets the job done. That's what matters.
