When Sleep Became My Simple Medicine
In my growing up days, my mother used to say one funny thing, “If you sleep well, your body will clap for you from inside.” As a small boy I did not understand what she mean. I thought it was just parent talk like when they tell you to read your books or wash your plate after eating. But later in my life, especially when stress start following me up and down, I begin to understand that sleeping is not just closing eye, but one kind medicine that no doctor can write on paper.
There was one period I was chasing work, school and also small business. I was sleeping late, maybe 2am, sometimes 3am, and waking up by 6am as if I was super hero. In that time my head used to pain, my body feel weak, and I was always angry small small. Even my father noticed one day and said, “You think you are steel? Sleep is not laziness.” That statement hit me because sometimes we feel sleeping means wasting time, especially in our generation where everybody want to hustle fast and show result.
Slowly slowly, I started forcing myself to sleep early. Not every day but at least more days than before. The first thing I notice was that my mood calm down small. I was not snapping on people anyhow. Second thing is my body stop doing “alarm” with headache and tiredness. Third thing was, my mind begin to think clearer, like when you clean dirty window and you can now see through it.
Even doctors and health people always talk that sleep helps body repair itself, make brain store memory well, help heart, help immune system, all those grammar. But for me I just explain it simple: sleep is like when you take phone to charge in the night so it will not die in the morning. If you don’t charge it well, no matter how fine the phone is, it will off. That same way human being behave.
My advice to anybody reading is don’t let world pressure push you to sacrifice sleep every day. Work hard yes, but rest is part of work too. Parents always say this thing but we ignore until life teach us the hard way. Good sleep will not solve all problems instantly but it will make your body strong enough to face them. And that is already big blessing.
