Well for us, the crabs are IN the rock pools. That's where all the food is. Some are for sure buried under the mud but we don't bother with those. There are mostly just clams in there anyways.

The rocks are teeming with crabs, it's awesome! Just gotta flip a couple over and you'll for sure get at least one, and sometimes you'll get a BIG one.

5 years old is the perfect age to spend some time crabbing. If you just bring a small kids shovel you can likely find the holes and dig them out. They will try to mostly run away more than anything, and will only pinch if you pick them up. A great pick up trick is to put your finger on the top of their shell, bring your thumb around the back of them, go under their belly and pick them up. Once you have them, flip them over and it sort-of puts them to sleep. Most of them will stop fighting, and even if they do, they don't last long and will stop after 2-3 seconds and you can hold them pretty easily! Good for grabbing them for the 5 year olds :D
