A Nice Treat - Crown Royal 18 Year Extra Rare Whisky

I have a very high tolerance for alcohol, so I typically go for quality over quantity. I can either spend a lot of money getting tipsy, or I can spend the same amount on high quality liquor and really enjoy the finer spirits, so I choose the latter.

Since I have kids, I take the rare date night opportunity to go whiskey tasting. The last memorable whiskey I had was William Weller 12 Year. Sadly, it's next to impossible to get here. I'd have to take a drive to Las Vegas to possibly track down a bottle, and the time to do it just isn't in the cards until the kids are older.

My wife and I went out for lunch a few months ago and went to a new restaurant/bar called Maddy's. I decided to sample a few shots of their more expensive whiskey. Of all the ones I tasted, there was a clear winner: Crown Royal 18 Year Extra Rare. I liked it so much, I bought a bottle when I found it in the local liquor store.

It came in a very fancy box that magnetically closes. Open it up, and the bottle is in the iconic Crown Royal bag, inside a chamber lined with gold.

The bottle itself is elegant, refined, and tastefully done.

It has a great aroma that is almost cherry-like. It's smoothe with a bit of caramel, vanilla and a hint of cherry to start. As the flavor tapers off, you get a medium, oak finish and a hint of cherry. It's a very fine whiskey that isn't overly expensive, yet really sets itself apart from your entry-level whiskeys. If you have the opportunity to sample this, don't hesitate!

Thanks!

Is the Hibiki a Japanese whiskey? I've tried some of those, but not that one. I'll have to add it to my list.

Looks like it would be a good tasting whiskey, I have never been much of a whiskey drinker until the last couple years. I sip on a glass occasionally now. Nothing high end, just some Jameson.

It's great for tasting! I prefer it neat, but I'd imagine it's great on the rocks as well!

Hey, Jameson is good stuff! My cheap go-to is Pendleton.

Interesting. I bought a special bottle of crown for my family for Christmas, but since I was sick I didn't get to share it with them. I don't think it was this bottle though. It was something else.

Was it in a box or the bottle by itself?

It was in a box. I think it was either the single malt or a 12 year option. I can't remember because I was torn between the two and the bottle is at my inlaws.

If it's one of the nicer ones in a box, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them.

I used to think expensive liquor was for people with money to waste, but now that I'm older I realize there are significant differences and you get what you pay for.

Yes that is true. It is also very subjective. There are some $20 bottles out there that I really love.

Also true! My inexpensive go-to is Pendleton. If it tastes good and it's inexpensive, that's a win in my book!

I really like Wild Turkey 101. Probably my favorite cheap bottle though is Gold Granddad Bonded. It's so good. I saw they have an aged version of it now, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet.

Nice! My favorite 18 year old is Glenlivet, never tried Crown at 18 yo. It must be nice and smooth!

Thanks! I don't think I've tried Glenlivet 18 year. I've tried the 12 year and it's pretty good.

Yeah, this whiskey is super smooth for sure!
