Career choice - Measure or Diversify?

(Edited)

When we talk about building a career and growing to becoming an expert in a particular field, it's a life experience, and you cannot achieve that with a diversified mind.

Image is mine

So for me, I'd rather stick to a career path and grow within it than go through multiple careers.

Currently, I have 3 jobs and then there's the freelancing I do for an NGO. Which technically makes it 4 jobs. Are they all related? Sort of they are.

My first job is the position of an admin in an Engineering field, my second job is the position of a manager in the hospitality business and then my third job is a writer and a blogger on hive, lol I bet some of you didn't see that coming.

My fourth job, however, is project management with an NGO.

Now you might want to say multiple jobs, but are they multiple careers?

No, they are not, because each of these jobs might be in different and maybe unrelated fields, but the job roles are similar and thus with that, I am building a career from these job roles and gathering experiences to make me an expert in my field as an Economist, which deals with the study of human behavior in relations with money and available resources.

The thing with being a jack of all trade, which is jumping from one career to another, is that it doesn't make you an expert. This is so because, one needs to be focused and dedicated in order to be an expert.

Now, if you have your mind set out here and there, you can't possibly attain the position of an expert. It's just like placing each leg on separate moving boats, you'll lose balance and eventually fall off to drown.

Again, it should be worthy to note that the career world will swallow you and if you are not careful, you are having all these certificates without any job to tie to it talk more of a career.

While I do understand that the Economic situation of things often prompts people to diversify, especially when they feel they are not adequately compensated financially as should, I am still of the opinion that the feeling of being unfulfilled in one's career usually happens when people do not have passion for what they do.

In such cases, they were not building a career in that field, but only securing jobs to earn a living by. When you build a career, you learn and gather the required experiences to create value and once value is created, money is made.

Another thing is, in the corporate world, people are searching for experience, they need to know you are well grounded in what you do, but then if you spend the greater years of your life acquiring different certificates to fit in several fields, what time do you have to practicalize on the certificates earned and then gain the required experience to make you an expert in your career before life expectancy catches up with you?

Do think about it.

In a nutshell, having your hands all over the place as a multiple career person might get you the money that you seek through earning ,but then becoming a specialist in one particular field makes you valuable and more of a creator of wealth.

This is my response to the #hivelearners weekend prompt.

Multiple Careers Or Just One

Is it okay for one person to go through multiple careers in the course of their lives? Or each person should just stick to one and grow within it. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but which would you prefer? Why?

Okay, okay, let me not get distracted. 🤣🤣🤣

For me, I'll prefer choosing one career and becoming an expert at it. When that is achieved, then I can move on to another one.

I think this gives me opportunity to know the depth of the career and to understand the possible success in it.

Honestly, dealing with career stuff is really stressful for me. I always worry about my job because I've had to look for new options a lot, even when things seemed stable. But now that I've got a lot of experience searching for jobs, I can say Layboard https://layboard.in/vacancies/jobs-in-uae/jobs-in-dubai/speciality/courier is a solid platform. It's international, which is great these days since a lot of people are open to relocating for a good job.
