I've seen those Instagram polyglots- they are very impressive. One of them knows several African languages, which blew my mind.
I suppose that your employer doesn't let you attend bio-science meeting and conferences because you must be working in the field, and the employer is worried that his IP might leak...
Another great way to learn is to start teaching! It sounds scary but it's an accelerated way to learn. I recently started doin this with astronomy. Every time I teach people some facts about the cosmos, their questions lead me to new knowledge - its a very organic learning process, and also humbling - because sometimes you got to tell your student "lets find out together", rather than being a 'know-it-all' or tell them "I don't know".
It can be many times, in this case is money… bureaucrates…
I totally agree with you about teaching. I used to teach in my graduate programme and also to high school in biology, it triggers you to study topics that for some reason you forgot or just holes in your knowledge! Good thoughts!
