Garden to Table #05 Green Apples /

Since this spring, I’ve been renting a garden plot that has a large, beautiful apple tree. And not just any apple tree—it's my favorite kind: a tart green cooking apple! This plot used to be rented by a friend, and I’ve received apples from this tree for the last two years.

Now that the apples are starting to ripen, I’ve been picking a few each time I visit the garden.

I’ve made kimchi with them, and also baked apple cake. The cake is really simple—just a basic pound cake batter poured into a pie dish, with sliced apples laid on top. Since it doesn’t need to rise much, I think it could easily be made vegan too.

Here’s how it turned out:

I sprinkled it with powdered sugar, and added whipped cream. It almost feels like autumn already with the taste and the weather like this 🍂 And I just can’t get over how good warm apples and whipped cream taste together... Oh, vanilla ice cream would’ve been perfect too 😆

Yesterday it was more than just cool—it was actually cold—so I made a pumpkin soup and added some of the apples to that too. I imagine they’d go really well in a curry as well.

I recently received the official garden assessment document, and noticed an entry about the apple tree. Looking closely... €4!? It says the tree needs pruning and is marked as diseased 😢 Luckily, a family of gardening friends will be visiting this autumn to help with pruning. We’ll have a closer look at the tree then, and if needed, I’m thinking of asking help to a tree expert too.

My mother, who passed away two years ago, loved cooked apples. I remember she always ordered apple pie with coffee in McDonald as she didn't have anything to eat except for them. We baked apple in oven, Tart Tatin was our favorite etc. I had wanted to plant a tree in her memory—so when I found this garden already had one, it felt like a gift. I want to take good care of it.

The apple harvest is far from over, and I’m planning to bake an apple pie next. I might even cut up some apples and make a compote to store for later... Just thinking about it makes me so happy 🍏

The apple pie looks so good that I want to bake one myself. At my parents’ house, there’s an apple tree with the most delicious apples. They are small, and the tree is grafted with pear. I’ve eaten so many apples from it. Sometimes I even started eating them too early, when they were still very sour. And of course, apple pies made from this tree are my favorite.

It's so nice you have a tree with memory. It is not common to have a tree in Tokyo so I don't have one. I wish I can make nice memories with my family and the green apple tree like you did! Thank you for sharing your beautiful memory, aemile-kh! 🍎

I was born in a small town, and my parents have a small house with a little garden. It’s almost like the countryside. There’s also another tree that is even more important to me: a black locust tree. I really loved climbing it, and it’s very beautiful when it blooms.

black locust tree

I think I have this tree in my area too. But I didn't know it grows to max 20m! Might be fun for a child to climb up. But was it fine with the strong needles? Anyways, trees are so nice 🌲 ☺️

The needles are only on the small branches, so there’s no problem with them. It’s maybe 10 meters high or less. It’s actually too cold for this kind of tree, so it’s unusual for my hometown. The tree usually blossoms quite late, in the middle of summer, because it needs a warmer climate.

What a mouth watering apple fruit it looks like it's so much tastier because it's right there in your own garden. You have more to do with these apples you can make a lot of apple pies in it.
