Vivid Dreams & Cosmic Voices: My Review of African Dream Root!

Yesterday, my African Dream Root—aka Silene Capensis—finally arrived from MN-NICE Ethnobotanicals, and I got to try it for the very first time. Here’s my official review of this mystical root—keep reading to discover the truth behind the hype.

I actually ordered this product a few weeks ago, but it got lost in the mail. I emailed MN-NICE, and they shipped me another batch immediately—no questions asked. The package arrived yesterday, and the directions recommend chewing the root in the morning. Since I didn’t get it until late, I decided to break off a piece about the size of my thumbnail and chew it before dinner. My goal wasn’t to chase visions or astral journeys yet; I simply wanted to confirm I wasn’t allergic.

After chewing the root, I double-checked the dosage instructions on the website: 100–500 mg. Not knowing what 500 mg looked like, I googled it and learned that a quarter teaspoon is about 500 mg. To my horror, the tiny chunk I just chewed would have filled a whole teaspoon—so I had unintentionally taken a huge first dose. I felt my stomach drop, that same sinking feeling you get when you realize you’ve accidentally dosed yourself with a dozen acid tabs.

Surprisingly, my stomach stayed calm. I felt a slight burst of energy, so I ate dinner and went about my normal routine for the next four and a half hours before bed. Later, after popping a melatonin gummy, I also took a micro-dose of magic mushroom—just for good measure, since they can enhance dream vividness too, the more the merrier. Lights out, I lay down and blinked… only to catch a flash of a red face behind my closed eyelids. “Wow,” I thought. “I’m not even asleep yet, and the dreams are already trying to break in.”

I lay on my back, closed my eyes, and was immediately met with a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes—LSD-style visuals, but faster and more fluid. I knew the tiny piece of shrooms couldn’t have caused this, especially in just a few minutes; it had to be the Silene capensis. Then I heard a voice, soft and slithering, like the snake from Disney’s Robin Hood. It whispered, “Let go.” Though eerie, I’ve heard such voices before during rare astral-projection experiences. I surrendered to the sensation—and suddenly floated three feet above my body. I was astral projecting less than five minutes after getting into bed.

Hovering there, I could still see vibrant colors, but now I also perceived stars and galaxies—especially purples. Then panic set in: in the astral, you don’t need to breathe, but my physical body does. I hate sleeping on my back because of a childhood fear of choking on saliva, so I snapped back into my body and rolled onto my side. Now I felt safe and ready for a long, dream-filled night.

I drifted off again, and this time I didn’t float out—I plunged straight into a hyper-real dream. The scene: a little town at sunset, the sky a brilliant orange, rendered like a first-person video game with both ground-level and bird’s-eye perspectives. People bustled everywhere, objects floated whimsically—nothing like my usual dreams. I was also lucid: the root seemed to trigger instant awareness that I was dreaming. Imagine tripping while dreaming, if that makes sense.

All night, I hopped between vivid dreams and occasional nightmares of being chased—nothing too terrifying, or I’d remember more details. Waking after each dream felt like stepping into a new world. I should have kept a dream journal by my bed, because the memories were freshest then. The entire night felt endless, packed with so many adventures that it was simultaneously exhilarating and exhausting. Honestly, I never expected that tiny, thumbnail-sized piece of root to do so much—but it was easily one of the most fun, intense psychedelic experiences I’ve had since my last DMT breakthrough meeting with the Machine Elves. 😂

My takeaway? African Dream Root is powerful and not for the faint of heart. Follow the dosing instructions—chew in the morning and start small. Don’t make my mistake of taking a massive dose hours before bed. If you’re curious about intense, crazy dreams (and maybe astral projection), give it a try—but respect its potency. At just $12 for 10 grams (enough for dozens of sessions), it’s an affordable way to explore your dreamscapes. If you’re interested, here is a coupon code get 10% off your first order.
