Drinking Coffee Time to Post
It is nearly 7pm and I am enjoying my first cup of coffee for the day. I admit when I work late, even if I sleep until noon my brain feels hardly awake until later in the evening, and at night is when it seems to run the best. However I must sleep by 3am or I drift away listening to the birds chirp as the sun comes up. After 4am there is no sleep only loss of the new day.
I have noticed that the Folgers coffee seems to be running out. Last month the prices were too high, nearly $25 for a canister of Coffee grounds. But a more reasonable $19 today still gave me a moment to pause. NoName brand coffee was only $17 so did it really make a difference if it was $17 or $19?
I purchased the Dark Roast Folgers coffee that I like, because when I am able to make Coffee at home I save money. I have accounted all my Tim Hortons purchases from last year and so far this year, and it is too much money. I can invest my money better in the future.
At least when I buy it bulk and make it at home, I am spending less than $50 on coffee and creamer, whereas if I buy Coffee every day (and food too) then it can be much higher! Additionally, it is much nicer to drink coffee and relax at home.
"Folgers is owned by The J.M. Smucker Company, a major American food manufacturer",
While I might be tempted to watch the stock more closely, this next article says Jm Smucker Co stock hits 52-week low at 93.85 USD 2025-06-18, 09:34 a/m. What is the cause here?

"The majority of sales are in the United States, with operations outside the U.S. primarily in Canada." and it looks like sales are up 7%, but this says shareholders have lost about $11.57 per share , as "Net Income (Loss): $(1,230.8) million". However we might still want Twinkies!
"On November 7, 2023, we completed a cash and stock transaction to acquire Hostess Brands, Inc. (“Hostess Brands”), a manufacturer and marketer of sweet baked goods brands, including Hostess® Donettes®, Twinkies®, CupCakes, DingDongs®, Zingers®, CoffeeCakes, HoHos®, Mini Muffins, and Fruit Pies, and the Voortman® cookie brand, which resulted in a new reportable segment for 2024, Sweet Baked Snacks." Should I support my favorite coffee brand? Or start tasting cheaper alternatives?

So that there looks like the drop theyre talking about, down around 112 to 95 USD.
I am not sure this explains why there were only a dozen containers of Folgers coffee on the shelf. Prices are all over the place, so I have to keep track of relative values and start thinking more about how far every dollar goes and where all the waste and loss is coming from.
Coffee is something that people keep drinking, no matter what the price is.
I bought my coffee for about $19 today but looking at another store,
"Folgers - Black Silk Ground Coffee, Dark Roast, 641 Gram = $27.99
$4.37/100g" !!
Walmart was farther away, Listed price online is
"Folgers Black Silk Ground Coffee 750g = $15.47
$2.06/100g"
Which is cheaper, but it says it is out of stock. Some more searching reveals that;
'In early June 2025, Loblaw pulled Folgers coffee from its shelves after rejecting what it called "unjustified" cost increases proposed by the manufacturer'* as cp24 reports " “After several weeks of negotiations, we were unable to reach an agreement with the manufacturers of Folgers coffee regarding their significant and unjustified proposed price increases,” said the email signed by Loblaw category director Suren Theivakadacham and obtained by The Canadian Press. “We are doing this because we are on the side of customers, and doing what we can to keep prices low ... This decision to delist Folgers coffee reflects our commitment to providing value for customers by not accepting unreasonable cost increases that would hurt Canadians.”"
There's some more that seems relevant, "Last month, Statistics Canada reported the price of coffee and tea was up 13.4 per cent in April on a year-over-year basis — outpacing both the 3.8 per cent increase in the cost of groceries that month, as well as Canada’s overall inflation rate of 1.7 per cent. Experts say higher coffee prices are in part due to recent extreme weather and changes in temperature, which have caused some producers to experience lower yields. Other pressures include a weak Canadian dollar, making it more expensive to import coffee to Canada from other countries, along with the fact coffee is one of the products still subject to Canada’s retaliatory tariffs against the U.S."
I don't particularly agree that taking Folgers off the shelf is the answer to higher costs. I understand they want to protect consumers but we are talking about market forces here, however excessive costs might break the budget in various ways. I may have to stock up and buy more Coffee while I can, if this is the unfolding situation. How long until there is no more Folgers left in Canada?
You can't take coffee for granted! What do you think of all this? What kind of coffee do you enjoy best? How do you take your coffee and how much coffee do you drink each week?
Wow there it goes! Up to 104.08
