Sowing My Indoor Salad Greens!
Sowing Indoor Greens
Here, in New England, North East Coast of the US, I have a limited growing season, compared to say, The US South, or California. Or almost anywhere in Central America like Costa Rica, Guatemala, etc. I have about 170 or so growing days, between my average LAST frost in spring, and average FIRST frost in fall. I am trying to grow food for feeding my family, without spending a lot of time and money, at grocery and farmer's markets. I can grow some things, for storage, some squashes, potato, etc, as well as drying some herbs for longer term. I can grow a lot of tomato, and preserve it as sauces. I can dehydrate onions, carrots, etc, for storage, too. BUT, I cannot grow leafy green vegetables outside in winter, and these do NOT store well.
I have, for a couple of years now, planted indoors, in my basement, under grow lights, a couple of types of lettuce, spinach, and arugula. These, I can grow over time, harvest, regrow and serve fresh at my table.
I find myself planting as follows:
I plant the first container, (above in the back) with some lettuce (left) and some spinach (right). After a couple weeks, I sow seeds in another container, and so, when I start harvesting some of the first container (behind), the second one is already growing. When it is time for harvesting from the second, I already have a third set of seeds growing, so I will always have one set I am harvesting, one I am growing, and one set of seeds I am just starting!
By planting indoors, I can feed my family fresh grown lettuce and spinach, without going to a market or store to pay expensive prices for who knows what kind of food?
I will be trying new and different salad greens, mustard greens, lettuces, arugula, and spinaches to see what grows best, fastest and most prolific!

Great project. I really admire you keeping fresh greens coming in the winter. I also really like a wide mix of greens. Maybe too many iceberg salads when I was growing up 🙄 We started adding some nasturtium leaves in our salads last summer which was a nice add.
Call me stubborn, I do not want to wait until spring for fresh greens!!!
We usually plant the seeds in the garden around March but seeing your post now just makes me think it's warm enough outside and we can start doing it. Thanks. It's been like a reinforcement of will and passion to read it!
I can't really plant outside until mid to late April, so, I want to make sure I have my fresh greens growing.
It's good that you started already. I had some rosemary covered with a plastic bag out in the snow all winter and it's still alive and have a few plants on the balcony on the house and we had an early salad fiesta in December :)
Awesome! That plastic bag acts like a little miniature Greenhouse!
It’s a good choice to choose to plant your food. Having a garden with different planted vegetables is a great idea to cut down the food expenses and also you get to eat fresh food and you and your family can stay healthier.
thank you.
yes, that's my goal. for sure.
Great idea to grow the greens in your basement. I'll be moving soon out of state and my next house will need a basement!
OR, a big grow sunroom!
What a fantastic start to the growing year! YUM! I hear you on the food footsteps instead of miles being healthy for your fam. It's one of the things I'm trying to get my head around this year now that we've settled into the north of the north instead of the south of the south here in the UK - much shorter growing season, harsher and saltier conditions... and the WIND! Excited to dig some new veggie beds though and get experimenting. Will be reading your posts for allll the tips! Ex

Ooh thank you for these - I'll check them out. The main thing is battling the wind - there are basically no trees on the island, so it whistles around!
Shame you don't have some nice rock walls, to act as wind breaks!
We do! Lovely old stone walls... but against the swirling 80mph+, it doesn't do much!
