To bring back the Kings: Is this how democracy ends? (Eng/Esp)
I don't even know what the right word is here, because shocked doesn’t quite cut it. Honestly, I don’t even know why I’m surprised—maybe I should have seen it coming. People I once considered sensible are now openly advocating for the return of monarchies.
Yes, I know how that sounds. Hyperbolic, dramatic, whatever. But I’m being as serious as a heart attack. What am I talking about, you ask? Oh, nothing major—just the casual re-writing of constitutions so certain people can stay in power indefinitely. I wish I were joking. I really do. But before you think I’ve fallen for some fake news rabbit hole, allow me to present some evidence.
Now, context matters, and I’m not blind to it. The person behind that tweet—and her husband, good ol’ Max Keiser—are currently living in El Salvador. Living the life, really. With one foot in the government and the president’s ear, they’ve never had it this good. So yes, their motivations are, to put it mildly, quite transparent.
Still, I expected to scroll down to the comment section and see people pushing back. Something. Anything. And look, I’ve spoken about Bukele before. I’ve even called his administration something close to a miracle for Latin America. But never—never—did I think I’d see people cheering for him to become a monarch. I didn’t expect so many to be okay with such a blatant regression, with the kneecapping of democratic values, and the re-centralization of power into the hands of a few elites. But alas, here we are.
I also feel like I have to say this, because otherwise my little rant won’t feel complete: I never imagined people would merge the fallacy of authority with AI dependency. Seriously—doesn’t it feel intellectually rotten to say, “It must be true, the AI told me”? That’s not just lazy thinking, it’s surrender. It’s admitting intellectual defeat in a way that words barely capture. At least, not any words being typed by my fingers.
At any rate, I hope—for the sake of whatever future we still have—that this road we’re on is cut short by some kind of revolution. Because if we keep walking like this, the era of kings won’t just return. It’ll be cemented by technologies that make their thrones unshakable for generations to come.
Is this how democracy ends? Not with a bang, but with a technocracy?
Wow... what else can I possibly say?
wow...

Wow… ¿qué más se puede decir?
wow…

We have that system in Germany. Merkel was chancellor for 16 years I think, until she stepped down voluntarily. Every system has it's pros and cons, but if I look at the current "democracy", I don't see many informed voters, in the contrary - they are, as you say, informed by LLMs. It's basically impossible today to be an real citizen, to stay informed about everything.
And some governments don't even care anymore. It's impressive how a lot of parties don't even make publicity with their concrete ideas on how they want to change things, but with dumbed down empty slogans. And even worse, a lot of people wouldn't even understand things if the politicians communicated otherwise. Spiraling down...
I will quote one of the few politicians I ever respected.
Ooooh Pepe, yes, he was one of a kind. Very few are like him, especially these days. Uruguay has a very interesting system, allowing several terms, but not consecutive.
Indeed , they must be changed more often and thrown to the dumping side
a la verga.
beh
A lot of dictators start as great leaders that people admired and then turn into dictators or kings... I guess that is just human nature power corrupts and ultimate power corrupts anything or anyone. That is why USA has term limits for presidents in the constitution, though Russia had that and now look they changed the constitution and crowned Putin as their king...
That AI image though! I don't know what prompt you wrote, but it came from a place of despair and disillusionment with the world. Even the founders of ChatGPT said that the most likely scenario is not that the AI will take over (Skynet style), but that we will give the control over to it willingly - we won't even notice how it is changing our social structure.
All political systems have faults, but going back to monarchy is crazy. Relying on genetics to produce good leaders is bound to fail. We have a king here, but he has no real power and his life is a sort of gilded cage as he is not really free to do what he wants. I don't actually mind such symbolic leaders too much, but don't give them power. Likewise with any sort of life presidency. We've seen various dictators cling to power for decades through violence and corruption. Who would have expected that sort of thing to be happening in the USA?
I certainly never imagined we would be having this conversation.. not in my lifetime.
