A night in Hadestown
A while ago we were given a voucher to see a West End show in London. For various reasons we did not use it for ages and we wanted to see a different show. We were able to change it and booked for Hadestown. We did not know much about it apart from it being a version of the Orpheus legend. This is a story from ancient Greece about a young man whose music can charm nature. He falls in love with a woman who ends up in the Underworld and he goes there to get her back.
Our timing was not great as there was a Tube strike in London this week. We could get a train into town, but then it was quite a walk to the theatre on Shaftsbury Avenue, which is the centre of the theatre district. Next door was Fawlty Towers and next to that was Oliver!
We just about had time to get some food. We tried Pizza Express, but the service was too slow and we walked up the road to Franco Manca. That was quieter and we got our food in a few minutes. It was great pizza.
We got to the theatre with a few minutes to spare and our seats were in the fourth row.
The set looked to be fairly static, but it pulled some surprises. It opened up for the Underworld scenes and there was a turntable in the middle with a platform that could go up and down. That was very well used.
We had a different cast to those in this video, but the show has been on for a while.
The musicians were all on stage with the drummer tucked in behind the bar. That is mainly to manage the sound levels. It was an all acoustic band and the music was a mix of traditional Americana with gospel, country, jazz and more. The composer of this musical is relatively young and she did a great job. The performers were great too with a nice mix of styles from the international cast. There were about twenty people on stage and some hardly left it.
The audience really got into it, but then it is a cool show. It had a different feel to some of the big musicals that seem to have a common style. Unlike a lot of those you could not expect a happy ending, but I will not spoil it if you do not know the story.
We left as the cast took their applause, but they were about to do an extra song. As it is we just caught a train and would have had to wait a while for the next one. At least we can easily get into London for things like this.
We have seen several other versions of this story lately. It was in Kaos that put the Greek myths in a modern setting and in The Sandman. Tragic love stories are always popular.

It was fairly thin, so not too filling.
How lucky you are to lice close enough to see some quality theatre in London. I only ever saw chitty chitty bang bang when I lived there and it was bloody awesome.
Looks like a great night out - but I have to ask - what is worse than particular toppings on pizza? KnIFe AnD fOrK? What the hell? I thought you people over there with the theatre and the West End, and the fable of Jack the Ripper were civilised enough to eat pizza with your HANDS? :P
I saw a production of The Phantom of the Opera when I was in London. It had a great cast, and I can't wait to come back again and treat my wife to a few musical theatre shows - she absolutely loves them.
Will be several years out at this rate, but to have all of this stuff available locally is amazing. The fact that it is there all year round must be overwhelming for those who enjoy this sort of stuff, or it might become violently banal.
I wasn't expecting to create an international pizza incident! Cultural habits will vary and a lot of people use cutlery for pizza here, but I do use my hands sometimes.
There are so many shows on in London and I have only seen a few of them. My other half is more into them and goes with friends.

My great uncle used to eat pizza with a knife and a fork. He also microwaved frozen pizzas. He ate them in front of the TV, which, behind it, had "The Kramer".
He was Greek, he barely spoke English, but he loved Kramer.
There are lots of 'rules', but eating is a personal thing. What counts as proper will vary depending on where you are and who you are with. I will eat take-away pizza from the box with my hands. I may fold it, but it seems some people think that's wrong.
I'm not sure what Kramer you are talking about. This is what I thought of:
It may seem like another 'sin', but I don't think I've ever watched that show. It has been on in the UK years ago, but I think it was on late. I expect it may be on one of the streaming services, but I barely find time to watch what I want to.
It hasn't aged well, but it is still funny.

I have been polite and honest with you, but all I get is daily harassment and you accuse me of lying. That hurts.
I doubt the whales look at my posts, but others will and see your comments. They will make their own judgement of those. That is down to you, not me. You can see I have told people to avoid you, but they make their own decisions. Seeing the same long comments posted every day is not a good look, especially when they are so critical of Hive. You cannot expect to get much support apart from your bilp friend who has been downvoted to negative for scams and spam.
I wish you no harm, but I do not want to hear from you as I cannot help. I do not care what anyone has told you, but the whales do not listen to me and I gave up talking to them. I am keeping my communications in public for transparency.

You can see that he left me another insulting comment. I have suggested to him that you two call a truce, but you really have to stop attacking everyone if you want any chance of him stopping. You have done this for a year and it just does not work. Nobody is going to read those long comments. I have no idea if he will stop, but you have to be willing to stop what you do.

It is good to see that people still go to a theater to enjoy a show when they can enjoy all (live and recorded) the shows in their home theater!
Pretty touching story of Hadestown and Orpheus! Quite fascinating it seems. Is there any movie on this?

I don't think there's a movie of this show, but the story has been told in many ways.
I haven't gotten around to the second season of Sandman yet. This looks pretty cool though. It's been a bit since I have been to a show. Probably the Temptations one that we went to a while ago.
We finished Sandman and it's sad that they do not plan to make more due to issues with Mr Gaiman.
I expect we will get to another show some time soon. We are going to another comedy gig soon.
That is cool. We have a concert in October we are going to locally.
How nice. Did you see all those new shinny buildings in the area? The place has changed a lot. The “west end” part has extended past Tottenham Court Road station with some new theatres there.
The last thing I saw there was Harry Potter. It was surprisingly very immersive - better than the movie even. It was expensive but worth it
The city has changed a lot lately. I was on a Thames cruise recently where you can really see it. There are so many new apartments by the river.
Some of the family saw Harry Potter and I heard it's impressive. These shows must be expensive to set up, but then they can make good money as some run for many years. This one was not the fanciest, but it was entertaining.
London is generally expensive, but the pizza place was not too bad. It was a little cheaper than Pizza Express anyway.

It was. I'm not sure if the Greek underworld exactly corresponds with the Christian hell as I think everyone ended up there. In Sandman they had both. This underworld did not seem that nice anyway.

I thought it was very good. Not too heavy and nice flavours.
