A few thoughts on a new side hustle... iNTO 2026 27
So with crypto DOWN, blog income DOWN, my house still rented out and my cost of living very much UP it's time to start thinking about another side hustle....
I mean it's not that urgent, but who knows things may become more urgent over time....
I mean the OBVIOUS thing for me to do to earn more cash is to get my damned house rented out - easy money - and this will be a priority, although I have been saying this for way too long.
SPRING HAS TO BE IT FOR THE HOUSE... RENTED OUT BY LATE SPRING. 8 weeks should be sufficient for me to get this sorted and keep on top of the rest of my life too!
I've got two main ideas about another side hustle....
- TV Extra work/ maybe some modelling...
- Developing one area of advisory expertise and become 'the go-to man'
- BLOG
- CAREER/ CONSULTANCY/ MEDIA

1. TV Extra-ing
This is really as it says on the tin, not a great deal of money in it obviously but I've always fancied it, I've got a certain look that could well suit - i'm thinking old beggar down a side alley in a Dickens drama for example....
2. Educational Xpert...
I've got two thoughts on this....
= DATA LITERACY... MILKING THE RESEARCH METHODS - I think there's a real need for this, basically critical data awareness... trusting people to be sceptical of their sources and getting people to think about what questions they should be asking about the information they are being fed!
= SOCIAL POLICY.... MILKING THE MP JOB - HOUSING being the obvious choice! OR AI/ TECH/ CAREERS ADVICE.... - Housing - there's an obvious end-point or job in this, same for careers advice which ties in with my teaching history, and getting people to think about AI obvs ties in with the data!
I'm also interested in both of these, it's just a matter of thinking through how exactly I can bring in an extra little side income through blogging/ writing - or if that is even possible?
3. Full-on retraining
I'm thinking here maybe as a financial adviser, maybe something ECO, maybe a geologist. I may save this for a few years, give me something to do in my 70s!
NB Full on retraining is different to the above.....
4. Developing the sociology blog further...
There is still stuff I can do here... video tuition being the obvious thing, maybe revision games, I just feel kinda swamped TBH!
5. Being clear about things I am interested in that probably won't ever make me any money....
Or I could call this 'Fun Stuff' - VERY unlikely to make me any cash...
- "WHO GETS A PIECE OF YOU LONG SHOT!!!
- "Permaculture shazazzle....
Final Thoughts...
Just written as a brain storm to give me a little clarity!
⚠️⚠️⚠️ ALERT ⚠️⚠️⚠️
HIVE coin is currently at a critically low liquidity. It is strongly suggested to withdraw your funds while you still can.
I had a much more exciting "extra" role in mind!
I think the data literacy/social policy/ai/tech advice is definitely an opportunity, would love to have a discussion about this.
I would have gone for viking - but I think we're way past peak Viking now.
Must have a meet up and discus, time is the problem there though!
Data literacy is probably the safest and most realistic thing to go for😂😂
I don't think I understand TV Extra-ing 😂😂
What would be under the "fun stuff"
Fun stuff = just trying to make money dicking about chatting about things I'm interested in!
I've been considering another side hustle or maybe even a part-time job. Leaning towards the side hustle though. Same as you, not really urgent, but if market conditions don't improve soon, things could start to get a little hairy without the added income.
The tough one for me is deciding what, too many options...
My friend works in the gig economy - he was a travel writer in the past and he does get the occassional job still mostly for airline mags. He's done TV extra work, and rents his house out as an air bnb. He tried chimney sweep but that didn't take off. One area he has pursued ok is flat pack assembly? If you have any skills in that department.
Flat pack assembly... I don't think someone would pay me to fumble about with their shelves for 3 hours and then hand them a worrying amount of leftover screws...
Lol :)
Do you know people that do TV extraing? Does it pay well? I always wondered about that in the UK - especially all the period dramas. I mean someone has to play the beggar after all....You'd meet some cool people as well. I'd probably just have that as a side hustle to the side hustle though !
Having property to rent ought to be a good earner if you find the right tenant. I've never looked into TV work, but it could be fun. It seems every actor has been in something like Holby City as they need fresh faces all the time.
