Knowing What And How
There's something that has been bothering me and have been struggling with making a decision, till today. I had enough and I think it's time to clarify my position for future disputes.
If you're reading this, you know I'm only posting in English. I speak four languages but right at the beginning of my Hive "career" I decided to only use English as posting languages for several reasons. My main goal on Hive was to practice English and share my photo, this is why I started posting. This is the most popular and widely used language and most of you understand it.
As a content consumer and curator, only read and curate English or bilingual posts, knowing in most of the cases, when it comes to bilingual posts, one is translated using an app. When I comment, I do it in English, with a few exceptions. Sometimes we fool around with mipiano and use another language that only we understand and I guess I posted one or two comments in Italian on posts written on Italian, just for fun, but have never had the intention to post in any other language than English.
We have users from literally all over the world, posting in all possible and impossible languages, some translate their post into English to reach a larger audience, but mostly to get curators' attention and because community rules require it, which is fine. Without having any evidence, I suppose those translations are done by using an app, as I said earlier in this post.
Quite often I'm getting Spanish comments and up until now I've been translating the comments in order to be able to understand and reply, to avoid looking rude or give the impression that I don't respect those who are commenting, but I'm not going to do it anymore. I'm done!
If your mother tongue is Spanish, but you can read my post and are able to understand it to a degree to comment as well, I'm sure you can write your reply in English too. After all, my posts are usually between 700-800 words without the footer and the comments I get are way, way shorter. Once a Spanish commenter told me I can translate the comment as we have a bunch of possibilities (no sh*t!!!), but so can you, especially when you know I won't understand what you are saying because I don't speak the language. After all, the main reason you are commenting is to let me know what you think about the topic of the post, isn't it? This begs the question, then why are you commenting?
Most likely after this post I'll be labeled as entitled, full of myself and ... (I'm letting the list open for you), but let's move on from the online world, into the real word and take an example, of two people knowing each other but speaking two different languages. This happens almost everywhere in the world as people migrate and most countries are home to a lot of nationalities. Imagine two people having as mother tongue two different languages and each of them starts to speak their own language. How are they going to understand each other?
I'm part of a minority in my country, my mother tongue is different from the official language and even though law says we have the right to conduct official business in our own language, meaning administrations have to have clerks speaking the language, I don't throw tantrums if I can't exercise my right. I switch to the official language as my goal is to solve my problem, but to do so, I need the clerk to understand what I am saying.
Once upon a time there was a thing called etiquette.
This is not a written rule set in stone, it is an unwritten one and basically common sense, but not around here. Hive is not to blame here obviously, it's up to each individual how they conduct themselves, but it says a lot about the individual.
If you're not a teenager and you've had a job or two in your life, you know building connections is key in life and in order to do that, you need to be smart, speak nicely, use the right words and so on as it's in your best interest to capture the attention of your counterpart and make them like you.
On Hive all this doesn't matter. People comment on whatever language they speak, some can't even bother to write their own comment and use AI (as if we're interested in reading what a bot says), and there are those who come in and bruh everyone without exception, using some slang only they understand. Those who comment using a different language than the language of the post may know the poster will not understand what they are saying, but they do it anyway. Why? Because they don't care.
The latest that shocked me was a single word comment after a convo in English with a random user, that not only made no sense at all, but I could not find translation to it anywhere, not even AI could help me. I wrote back that I have no idea what that word means and therefore I'm ignoring it, just to be polite. This is when I was invited to a video call, to be explained what this word means in Persian ... 😳 I mean ... seriously?
This on a granular scale could look like I'm blowing a minuscule thing out of proportion, but this is more than that. It goes to show why, or better yet, makes you wonder why these people are commenting and how they are conducting themselves in life, how they are trying to achieve their goals.
Somehow all this comes down to education, or the lack of it to be precise, which can be blamed on your parents, who are responsible for your education till a certain age, but after that, it's on you. It's on you how you shape your future, how you learn new skills, learn to integrate yourself in different communities and so on, what connections you make and what you do to be better than yesterday.

Wow, this contains a lot of knowledgeable information to behold. Thanks for sharing @erikah
The frequency you're commenting with shows you haven't read any of these posts. All your comments are generic, saying nothing.
Congratulations, you know 4 languages. It's a great view I enjoy visiting your page
Thanks but I don't feel like a huge achievement though. The view is on the other hand, it's a lovely place.
I think it's a great success to be unfair to yourself,
I'm glad you made the decision to address this issue. You are too kind a person to struggle with accommodating replies in other languages. It is afterall, your own blog. As for the rude one word comment and the resulting reply, well...you made the right decision I feel. You do everything right as far as I can tell and I hope that you feel unbothered going forward.
Wonderful architecture in your photos!
Thank you Tamara! It's not an easy decision, especially if you want to do good, but at the end of the day, it's our decision how much we want to tolerate and why tolerate something that makes us uncomfortable, right?
The photos are from a Romanian castle situated in Fagaras, a lovely historical place with a bloody past.
Thanks for the nice comment and have a nice weekend :)
Absolutely correct. You have a nice weekend as well!
Thank you!

Oh Erikah frien, first of all, I have to confess: I laughed out loud at the "video call to explain a term in Persian" thing hahaha 🤣🤣🤣 What a strange thing!... Well, regarding the use of English, I like it for almost everything as a standard language that allows for interaction, and it seems to me that this is how it works almost globally... On #Hive I always make my posts in English and my native Spanish lang, and I answer comments in Spanish if it's made in that language, or in English if it's in English or any other. So far, it's worked well for me this way... I think that these days, with so many online translation tools, even for those less proficient in English, it's easy to use it for everything related to interacting with others online...
I liked your article; it's one of those things like: "It had to be said, and it was said" That's good!...
☝️ By the way : Diplomatic etiquette forbids calling for the death of a national leader... It also made me laugh a lot! 🤣🤣🤣 It sounds so abrupt! 😐
Have a great week end my friend!!!... Thanks for sharing!

Yup, goes to show how these people only think of themselves, never think of the other party, if they will be able to understand it or not. And yes, this had to be said and I said it 😜
I have always admired you for posting bilingual and commenting on English and how well constructed your comments are.
As about the definition I quoted, Cambridge dictionary can be funny too 😆
Have a wonderful weekend my dear and true friend 😊

The truth is that it makes no sense to comment in Spanish when the main content or topic is in English, it's a bit far-fetched. Just like the new trend I'm seeing about commenting in two languages. If you, as an English speaker, want to consume content in another language that you don't understand, you will surely use a translator, so use the same tool to comment if you want to contribute something, it's as simple as that. But well these are just my thoughts, I could be wrong, I'm sure I am.
I don't mind commenting on two languages as it means the commenter is of a different language and translating their comment to a different one for a broader audience and it's quite good, it shows they care. But when they don't give a damn and drop their comment on a language that is different from what I used, it's frustrating, so I'm going to ignore them from now on.
I thought I was the only person who gets frustrated and annoyed when a random user drops by not only with a short and meaningless comment, but also written in a different language than that the post was written. I really find it so disrespectful and it makes it hard to even want to reply to it. Ugh!
You're not the only one, but I'm done! I'm not going to reply to them anymore. If they can't be bothered to translate their comment to English, why should I be bothered?
I think everything should just be posted in whatever native tongue someone decides to post it in. Its 2025. We all have browsers with a translate button.
Agree to disagree.
This means they can translate their comment and post it in the language that the post was written on. It's 2025.
I've done this on very few occasions - but these days, If its an author I know and want to read their other language posts (that aren't in English) - I'll translate, but generally won't leave a comment, in either language.
The underlying issue is that not a lot of people actually read the content - no matter what language it is written in! :)
There has been a few occasions that I've translated Spanish posts because I knew the author, because they used to post in English. I haven't left comments as the topic has been chit-chat, nothing interesting.
You mean the author of the post not reading the comments?
If yes, then I agree. I see a lot of them can't be bothered to reply to comments, which is rude in my opinion. Those commenters should stop commenting on these authors posts, but if the author is a curator at a well known curation project, then you can see why they are commenting.
I personally stop commenting if I see the person can't be bothered to reply, I see no reason to waste my time. It's common sense.
A lot of authors fail to engage in their comments section.
A lot of comments (though, less than before) - now the problem tends to be vague, AI written responses show evidence that the post itself has not been read.
There's problems from both sides. No one is perfect, but if you're not going to read the post, then leave a comment, why leave a comment at all, when the author is going to know (by lack of understanding shown in the comment itself) - that it wasn't genuine engagement, and is probably in the category of spam.
Having said that, we're way better than random wordpress blogs in terms of engagement (we're higher),and the volume of spam (we're less). Spam here at least tries to be relevant. It tries poorly, but it tries all the same.
Yes, it doesn't take much to put two and two together.
As for me, as I said somewhere else, in another comment, I can only speak three languages:
I think the last two are languages that all humans have in common.
At the beginning I used to ignore the fact that they did not read my post but not anymore. If it's obvious, I'm letting them know, maybe they change their behavior. There's a frontend that is rewarding commenters blindly, which basically encourages spam commenting. They are also curating everything blindly and supporting abusers because a lot.
🤣🤣🤣
I speak 4 languages but 2 are useless once I leave those countries. One is a bit better known and the other is English.
I am not sure which one you are referring to, but I have a suspicion. I'm not going to name that one, but I am going to mention another trend I have noticed.
For short form content, we have Snaps, Waves, etc.
Snaps and Waves are published with comment rewarder turned on. As a result, all users participating in the platform may get some reward. Snaps and Waves have their own "top" level Posts which all the comments appear on, then rendered in the respective interfaces.
I have seen multiple users publish the same thing on Waves and Snaps. (I look at both) - to me, I see it as a two edged blade, maybe three...
or maybe,
Three: They are attempting, in a small way, to farm rewards.
Not everyone understands the mechanics, but I try to limit my participation (when I make a snap) - to one platform - after I noticed this trend among users.
What are your thoughts?
I've never used these because my time is limited and I'm trying to dedicate it to posts. However I see those snaps that are popping up in my feed. I'm not sure if waves are visible to me as well or I'm mistaking which one is 😬
Even if the content is not visible, it's still the same content and rewarded from the same pool. Why should be judged differently? Why would they be rewarded multiple times for the same content when it's basically copy paste?
There are so many things wrong on Hive, on so many levels, I can't even begin to tell you and it's sad ...
Peakd has the option for a unified view across all platforms (without needing to swap platforms, but comparing across browser tabs when interacting with the differing front ends), yeah, copy and paste.
You don't need to preach to me about the things wrong on Hive, I sing in the same choir, albeit with a quieter voice.
What worries me is not the small abusers we are trying to stop every day. It's the direction the big stakeholders have taken and even after providing evidence of what they are doing is wrong, unproductive and waste, they still refuse to listen.
Hive could be among the leading platform in its own category, yet it feels like we're going backwards.
I think the biggest threat to that status quo is "better content". Content so good that it cannot be ignored.
Maybe I am delusional, but I think we all have our own visions.
Sorry for going so far off topic, but it cannot be solved for mathematically, since upvotes will always win out over downvotes (in terms of mana).
I don't have a solution, but I will keep plodding along at my own stuff and supporting and engaging the good stuff, too.
No worries, I don't mind going off topic if the discussion is genuine and not just to increase the number of comments.
As far as quality content is concerned, basically one should have the right to post what they want, as long as it's not abuse, and quality is subjective as we have different level of education, different backgrounds and hudge content differently.
Hive is also not just about blogging and could be about and is about a lot more.
I also don't have a solution for all the problems, just a few, but if our voice is not heard, there's little we can do.
One of the things I consider key to interacting with other people is being able to understand them and put yourself in their shoes. The problem is that there is no etiquette and no understanding towards the other person. I usually comment in English using apps, as I am not fluent in the language.
Common sense is important. If someone writes in English, and the community demands that rule, then it should be written that way. It's something I understood a few years ago. If you don't speak my language, but you're writing in English or Italian, I should interact with you that way. It's not just politeness, it's logic.
If you want to try to talk to me in Spanish, that would be great. But it has to be mutual.
I used to write everything in Spanish. Now I prioritize English at the top. The idea is to show what's here despite the darkness. It may sound romantic, but it's part of the process, the game, and the fun. As time goes by, it becomes part of you. They call them habits. In the Merli series, there is an interesting explanation about collective pressure.
Generic comments are a problem, and so are those made by AI. They're a headache, but I respond to them out of politeness: my mother taught me that. However, people have problems: if you don't like something, don't comment on it. Look for something you do like. I don't understand these comments: “Good post!”
It makes no sense. I vented a little. I often use Venezuelan idioms in my posts, but I add their meaning in parentheses... It's logical; it's called cordiality. Sometimes I may forget, I'm human, I have work to do. Greetings...
