From 9-to-5 to 14-Hour Hell: Why I Had to Quit This Job

Yesterday was a tough day for me, I had no choice but to give the resign and quit my job because it had become toxic to the point

where I wasn't able to talk to my own mother even though we are living in the same house

I used to work in the day shift which was going perfectly but they forced me to do night shifts, went on to give it a try

Why did I Quit My Job

When I was doing day shift it was all fine and good cause I was able to go to work on time and return home timely

From 9am to 6pm was my shift and routine was also fine.

In night shift it went from 6pm to 2am that is closing, we'd close everything by the time it was 3am

But it gets worse from there, now we have closed and everyone went to home who lives nearby

I used to come from far away in metro which is closed at night after 10pm.

Would Wait for Metro to open at 6am

Now after doing 9 hours shift I'm not able to go home, I'll be sitting outside the branch waiting for the metro to open at exactly 6am

That's three more hours of just waiting though in those 3 hours I used to write blog for hive if I wasn't tired

But you know everyone gets tired after a hectic 9 hours shift still somehow I used to finish off my blogs

Now the metro is open it'd take exactly an hour to reach home that's 7am when I step inside my home

And what I'd do next? Sleep without even doing breakfast or dinner whatever cause I was that tired

Than waking up around 4 to 5pm and doing the breakfast just before leaving for work again.

14 hours shift, single meal

The salary package I had was just under $150 and I realised it isn't worth 14 hours of my time and running on a single meal that I used to do from home before leaving for work

They had no travel allowance, food allowance even though it was a brand from UK

Yet it sucked badly and left no other choice except for quitting.

It was only my second week when they changed my shift from day to night and I said Fuck it, I'm not doing this anymore

Day shift made sense cause I was able to reach home on time, have some family time as well as do dinner with the family together

But it all went downhill the day they decided to change my shift, kind of ruined my mental health cause I was always depressed thinking about How I'll go home and I'll have to come again tomorrow

Wrapping Up...

So I thought it's better to get rid off it and find a better job now that I've more experience. I believe it's totally unfair to work more than 14 hours a day, get paid less than a $150 dolllars for a month

I'm kinda confused how I'd keep up with the bills and responsibilities but somehow I'm sure there's better opportunity out there for me.

So yea I'll continue the job hunt, not going to rest.. I need to do whatever it takes to get a better job.

You're all welcome to comment on this rant of mine, just had the worst day so thought I'd spill it all instead of keeping it in.

That part about sitting outside till the first train at 6 am hit me. Waiting like a night guard for the metro sounds like a side quest nobody asked for. No job is worth wrecking your sleep and your time with your mom, especially for that pay. Are you aiming for a fixed day shift now or maybe remote work so the commute is out of the picture?

Open for both, just want a better job that doesn't drain every last blood in your body..

Totally fair. What roles are you aiming for and what hours suit you best? If remote is an option, try filtering for jobs that state fixed shift times, offer transport or meal support, and no night rotation. What pay range would make it worth it without a sleep tax?

dayshift is perfect Imo, was working in fast food but would change role now. There are better options imo.

Unfortunately they don't that much incentives to employees, we gotta manage all that on our own.

About $300-$500 is far better but no one pays that much here.

That's quite inhumane and just not sustainable, you did what you had to do. Hope you'll have better opportunities in the future, keep the faith and good luck!
