Orelhão (Big Ear) - Brazilian telephone booth [EN/PT]

A few days ago, while strolling through the Galeria Nova Barão in downtown São Paulo, we saw a Vivo telecom Orelhão payphone that apparently was still working.

Once ubiquitous, these typically Brazilian telephone booths are increasingly rare to find today; they've become a little-used and unknown piece of public equipment, especially among younger generations.

We didn't even try to test it because completing the call would require a phone card. I remember when it first appeared, it worked with metal tokens, about the same size of a coin. Even today, some people use the slang term "caiu a ficha (the penny dropped)", referring to the mechanics of completing a call.

I noticed that the telephone keypad on this payphone is buttons, but I think they used to be dial buttons. Despite hating talking on the phone, I did use one and always carried phone cards with credit for emergencies. I once saw a father trying to explain to his young daughter how this strange machine worked. I remember that at the time people criticized its peculiar shape, saying that instead of isolating from noise, it echoed and amplified the sounds. Dias atrás passeando na Galeria Nova Barão no centro de São Paulo vimos um orelhão da Vivo aparentemente ainda funcionando.

Antes onipresentes, hoje em dia encontrar alguma destas cabines telefônicas tipicamente brasileiras é cada vez mais raro, virou um equipamento público pouco utilizado e desconhecido pelas pessoas mais novas.

Nem tentamos testar pois para completar a ligação seria necessário ter um cartão telefônico. Lembro que quando surgiu, funcionava com fichas de metal, do tamanho. Até hoje tem gente que usa a gíria "caiu a ficha", que faz referência a mecânica de completar ama ligação.

Vi que neste orelhão o teclado do telefone são botões, mas acho que antigamente já foram de discar. Apesar de detestar falar no telefone, cheguei a usar e tb sempre tinha cartões telefônicos com créditos para qualquer emergência. Uma vez vi um pai tentando explicar para a filha pequena como funcionava esta aparente geringonça. Lembro que na época criticavam o formato peculiar dizendo que em vez de isolar do barulho, ecoava e aumentava os ruídos.
