I interrupted a lizard having some lunch.

While my son was playing on his slide he noticed something moving in the ground. And yelled out "what is this!!"

So I went over and had a look and it was a pretty big garden skink.

At a closer inspection he had some sort of lava cocoon in his mouth.

It looked like he was trying to find a hiding place but the cocoon was too big to get back under the slide and he didn't want to loose his lunch.

These garden skinks are very common here in Australia. I remember when I was a kid and I would see how many I could catch when I played in the back yard.

These skinks defense mechanism is that they drop their tail. There tail eventually grows back but when they are distressed or in danger of a predator eg: birds. They drop their tail and it wiggles around so they can make a quick escape.

This guy sure was not letting his lunch go. He tried to hide multiple times but the cocoon was too big to get through the gaps.

Be he didn't run away for some reason. So I was able to get these shots with my phone.

Having a two year old really does make you look at the magic in world through child's eyes again. Something which we all have unfortunately lost due to adulting. So it is very refreshing exploring the little things of the backyard again 🙂
