Some interesting facts about America's Top Fishing Port

I have mentioned before that it is often rated as the MOst valuable fishing port inthe country, but I did read recently thats Number One by Value, Not Volume The Port of New Bedford has been the most valuable commercial fishing port in the United States for over two decades, since 2001. However, it doesn't always rank highest in the sheer volume (pounds) of seafood landed. Its top ranking is due to the high value of its primary catch: sea scallops.

The Scallop King Scallops account for a massive portion of the port's revenue—often over 80% of the total value of all landings. Nearly 50 million pounds of these prized New Bedford scallops are landed each year, I knew it was a lot but thinking of 50 Million pounds of scallops is mind blowing.

New Bedford was once the "whaling capital of the world" and, at one point in the mid-1800s, the richest city in the world per capita. The port featured prominently in Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and still the Moby Dick book is popular in the city, I saw a blog post the other day where they do a marathon reading of it

Today, the ships are different, pursuing fish and scallops rather than whales, but the deep connection to the sea remains.

The port is home to a fleet of more than 500 commercial fishing vessels and supports a thriving working waterfront. The industry employs thousands of people both directly and in related shoreside businesses like processing plants, cold storage warehouses, and repair services.

An average of one million pounds of seafood moves through the port every single day, again a number I find hard to imagine, From New Bedford, the catch can be on a truck to a local wholesaler or on a plane at Boston's Logan or New York's JFK airports, headed to domestic and international destinations.

And while as I understand it the pay for working onthe fishing boats is very good, commercial fishing is consistently ranked as one of the most hazardous occupations in America due to unpredictable ocean conditions and demanding work.

Its not often I try light painting at the port as there is too much man-made light there, but I did try and got this one one day

Hope you can get back to walking there again soon. It sounds like a busy port city with lots of rich history to boot.

I have no doubts about the photo you shared. It's truly beautiful, with the boat docked at the pier. Thank you, friend, for sharing.
