A solo exhibition by a local sculptor.

Around a week ago I went in the main square of the city where I live (Pistoia) to meet a friend of mine for a coffee and some chats. While I was there I noticed there was a solo exhibition in a room of the ancient building that is the seat of the Municipality.
That room is the room the Municipality use to give to the artist for exhibition and even if is not so large, it's a nice place for artworks.
That day there was a solo exhibition by a young local sculptor called Alessandro Gonfiantini and so I decided to visit it and to took some pics with my camera (a Nikon Coolpix B700).

It'0s not so simple to take pics of artwork inside a room, but I did my best. 😊

The sculptures in the exhibition were all wood sculptures. As the artist said (and I agreed with him) wood seems to remain "alive" even after the cut and it creates knots and cracks so the sculptor has to adapt and to change the vision during the process.

Different types of wood are used, including willow, olive, walnut and cypress, often found in the fields or donated by local farmers.

As you can understand watcing the pics, the main theme of these sculptures is about the human faces, faces of ordinary people but also some sacred figures of the Christian tradition.

It was a very interesting exhibition and I wish the best to that young sculptor!

See ya soon and stay safe,
Silvia

I love it. While admiring these lovely sculptures was thinking when was the last time I saw wooden sculptures but honestly I can't remember. You know I'm a regular at exhibitions, but wooden sculptures are becoming rare, so I'm happy you posted about this exhibition.

Happy Easter Silvia! 🐰🥚

I agree with you, wooden sculptures are becoming rare. Maybe all the sculptures are becoming rare. My hubby @paolobeneforti started his way on art (around 30 years ago) like a sculptor and along the time he sculpted different materials (especially marbles and other rocks), but sculpting is really a very long process (more then painting) and so artists who lives thanks their art prefer to work on paintings and just sometimes on sculptures. Another note is that there are more paintings collectors than sculptures collectors and this is another thing that makes the difference when you have to invest time doing this work. ❤️

I fully agree with you. Sculpting is not easy and also sculptures are not so easy to sell either, due to their size as well, but there are other reasons too.

I have a sculptor family friend and know how much trouble is to get the right wood and prepare it as you can't just go buy it from the store, like canvas and paint.
