Another doggy water bowl...

...in a different location, and also different birds.

This male Starling doesn't believe in the ladies first rule:)

We sat for some coffee at an open-air coffee house, and suddenly a pair of Red-winged Starlings (Onychognathus morio) appeared. By now I am sure that they were used to us, due to our frequent visits at the coffee house on weekends. I even did a post about my wife hand feeding them with cheese some time ago. This time around, she had no cheese in her pocket as she gave it away to some other birds.

A bit more about this Starling species from Wikipedia.

The red-winged starling (Onychognathus morio) is a bird of the starling family Sturnidae native to eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia to South Africa. An omnivorous, generalist species, it prefers cliffs and mountainous areas for nesting, and has moved into cities and towns due to similarity to its original habitat.

The red-winged starling will obviously only perch on plant structures that will be able to support its weight; therefore when taking nectar it will choose certain species with strong, robust racemes with easily accessible flowers, such as that of Aloe ferox and Aloe marlothii, and not Aloe arborescens. Large flowers that can support the bird's weight, such as that of Strelitzia nicolai and certain Protea species, are also chosen.

After the male had a drink, the female followed suit.

Yep! She is a real beauty with her grey head.

The male started scrounging for nesting material.

And the female kept a watchful eye on him.

It is almost as if the female was telling the male about what to collect.

And finally, when the male had gathered enough, they both departed at haste.

From sipping nectar, to sitting on cattle in order to take ticks off, the starlings have many sources of food. They are very cheeky birds, and one dares not to go near them when they have their babies around. Eventually when these two breed, then the patrons that sit at the tables will have to watch out, as a starling will dive down from one of the trees to snatch the food out of their plates, or even from their loaded forks. Pandemonium is the result :)
Such is life.

I hope that you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Those are pretty birds. The starlings we get tend to hang around in gangs and they mob the bird feeder. They can be noisy.

Pretty indeed. Do you guys also have the red wing starlings there, or is it another starling specie?

We have European starlings that are pretty in their own way, but they can be thugs.

Oh yes, we also have the European Starlings here, and they can be a nasty bunch. We also have 14 different species of starlings here and the European one was introduced to SA from Europe.

So much beauty in these beautiful birds. I didn't know them but through this publication I do. The pair looks lovely and I am sure the female was telling him in her language that it was more convenient to be able to form the nest, although the male should have let his mate drink water first, in an act of chivalry. But that's nature's way.

It doesn't matter that there was no cheese to give them, the water was perfect for them and besides they are beautiful photographs where the look, that look of hers says it all. Thank you very much for sharing them with all of us. Hugs!

Oh yes, they are lovely birds. I am glad to have introduced them to you, and the female told the male to only pick soft stuff for the nest, as she will have to sit on it when she lays the eggs :)

They were thirsty, as it was a very hot day here, and thankfully they didn't jump on our table for food, as they normally do.
I am glad that you liked the post.

That was cute and she is photogenic, although towards the end the male did started to shine in the photographs too.
Merry Christmas Zac

Maybe she is a model in the featheredfriends world Ed. :)
The male is also stunning, but I couldn't get a good shot of him.
Merry Christmas also to you and yours!

Such pretty birds! Are they related to starling from Europe or a separate species altogether? I know the European starlings are all over North and South America now. Both of them have beautiful markings though, and it's funny that they take advantage of the free water. They aren't dumb! I'm sure they were hoping for some cheese too, but not that day...

No, they are not related and a species in their own right. We also have the European starlings here, and they are invasives from Europe. When these open their wings in flight, then the red is fully displayed. Nope, no cheese and they must have eaten somewhere else Lol
