🏰 “13th century Norman ROSCOMMON CASTLE” in ROSCOMMON ~ IRELAND 🇮🇪 ~ Wednesday Walk

Hi all 👋🏻

Today I want to share with you a walk around the #ruins of “ROSCOMMON CASTLE” in ROSCOMMON” ~ Ireland 🇮🇪
This castle is dated from late 13th to early 14th century and yo will see it consist out of #Norman architecture.

One of the most important royal castles in Ireland during the late 13th and early 14th centuries

We find that :

It was built in 1269 by Robert de Ufford, Justiciciar of Ireland, on lands he had seized from the Augustinian Priory.

Roscommon Castle was finally burned down in 1690 and gradually fell into decay. Today, the Castle’s past can be explored while enjoying the adjacent Loughnaneane Park and Playground, a 14 acre recreational area.

Now in ruins, this dramatic and imposing 13th-century Norman castle was once in the hands of Hugh O'Connor, King of Connaught.
It features a quadrangular plan with rounded bastions at the corners and a double-towered entrance gate.

Let’s start out walk 😎

We arrive from the side road and walk past the low wall towards the castle.

Some #crows are curious and land on the wall, they join us today 😉

Already we see a large part of the ruins. The imposing side bastions/ towers.

Around the corner we find this sign that tells us a bit more about the castle and its history.

For ease… I took a few close ups from the drawings/ floor plans for you. 🤓

Here we see a drawing as they think it would have looked in 1307.

I am in awe… it’s so wonderful to see. One can definitely visualise it much better now. How it once was many MOONS AGO 😊

Come, let’s walk through the castle gate 😎

At the exit we see the opposite side.

And behind us the gate.

Some steps next to it go up… but an iron gate stops us from walking up 😏

Let’s wander around on the inside and take in some details…
The ruins reach high and tower high above us.
We see some scaffolding at some areas. They are obviously securing some parts.

Look at the details of the windows. The thick walls…

It’s amazing to see all the details.

As it is a nice sunny day and the sky is bright, the ruins stand out well today 😊

The grass is green and we step back a little to look at the bigger picture of what we see on front of us. 😊

The far right is where we entered the gate.

We walk now along the structure that was opposite the entrance gate.

So many floors and look at how well the windows are preserved. 🤓

Every corner is so high up. The walls standing tall. It must be with the thickness they are.

Cute details… I love the #vines growing up. It makes it look like a #fairytale 🥰

Here you can see parts of how strong this #fortress was. Look at the window… how thick and well protected one would have been behind it. Defending the castle.

I tried to give you a feel for the height of the walls around us. So I haven’t corrected all photos with the vertical lines going up.

One area we could peak through a gate and see they collected parts of arches and windows. Maybe they will restore them.

Let’s look one more time around before we walk into the park.

When we walked the trail around the sculptures… we see the NATURE CHAIR on the left and the castle behind it in the distance.

Finishing the trail we walk past the castle again and see how well it is protected. 😎 The outside walls looks so different then the area we walked around the inside.
