Visiting The Baum Bistro

(Edited)

Last Saturday we were celebrating a birthday in the family, a very important one and we were invited the Bistroteca Baum, which is in Dumbraveni, Romania. I've never been there as it's not exactly 5 minutes from where I live, so was to go and check out a new place.

Food.jpg

The plan was to check out the town too as I've never been there, but weather had other plans and by the time we finished our birthday celebration and lunch, it started raining, so we were left with no other choice than to jump in the car and drive home. However, I took a lot of photos of the place and food, so today I'd like to share these with you, pin my post on the map, in case someone else is thinking of visiting the place.

The place is situated on the Tudor Vladimirescu street 49, in Dumbrăveni, Sibiu county, next to a guest house.

It's harvest and pumpkin season, so the whole place was decorated accordingly, with autumn leaves, pumpkins of different sizes and shapes and other beautiful things nature has to give during autumn.

20251011_145824a.JPG

The beauty of the place is that there's a huge terrace, which is suitable for later autumn use as well as it is heated. As you can see, there's an old (I think it's old) water tower next to the venue, that can guide you, in case you feel lost.

Having big screens with sports on took a little away from its value as you should not watch any screen in a restaurant, or bistro, but it's not my decision.

20251011_164809a.JPG

Their offer doesn't stop with the restaurant and guesthouse. There's a spa and fitness center at the back of the guesthouse, which looked inviting, but it wasn't our goal to pamper ourselves that day.

20251011_151955a.JPG

I started with a mojito, as always as that's one of my favorites.

20251011_152151a.jpg

It was a nice surprise to see the paper place mats containing the place's history. I love these as it's educative, at least you learn about the city and/or the venue.

20251011_153651a.jpg

20251011_153733a.jpg

This was a Transylvanian vegetable soup with pork and sour cream.

20251011_153642a.jpg

This was the famous (in Romania) tripe soup, which used to be the soup of the poor once. Now it is considered top category and it is among, if not the most expensive soup. Both were very good.

20251011_155711a.JPG

This was pikeperch fillet with white sauce and mash potato.

20251011_155914(0)a.jpg

This was my dish and it was kangaroo fillet with hunter's sauce and potato.

20251011_155844a.jpg

This was zebra steak with cigar sauce, mash potatoes with truffle.

All the dishes were great, we had no reason to complain and I'd go back anytime, to taste everything they have to offer.

We had a reservation for 3pm, but were told the table is at our disposal till 5pm, when the vine party starts. Then we'd have to find another table, if we'd like to stay. There was this piglet grilling for the event. As far as I know, there was an entrance fee, from 5p, which included a dinner (part of this piglet too, a snack most likely), drinks and music. We didn't stay to benefit as we had lunch and it was not the purpose of our visit, but we got some welcome drinks on the house.

20251011_164939a.jpg

This was a round wine case, with I liked a lot. Most likely not many have the space to have such a wine case, but it definitely looked good there.

20251011_165000a.JPG

There was a special corner for the kids as well, very thoughtful of them honestly.

20251011_165004a.JPG

Towards the end, the band was getting ready to play and the whole place got really noisy all of the sudden, so we were happy to have had 2 quiet hours.

It is definitely a place I would visit again. The service was impeccable, the dishes delicious, the place I can call unique in its own category, so I can recommend it you without hesitation.

i agree about the tv, in the restaurants i go there is no tv, only one by the sea had it and it's annoying as it makes noise, distracts and so on

these dishes looks good! meat my love! how was the zebra and kangaroo? similar to other meats? i only seen that kind of meat in a restaurant heading south italy but its not common, pretty researched

Not many restaurants have TV here, but this one had several screens. Not good.

The food was really good. I had the kangaroo and tasted the zebra too. The kangaroo was good but the meat wasn't so tender as chicken for example. It's a different type of meat. The zebra was good too, but it was medium rare steak and not exactly my favorite. It wasn't bad though.

Oh i don't like medium rare aswell, i like it well cooked! Zebra must be similar to horse though? I eat it at fairs often

I must admit I am not anti a tv by the bar area and I also am addicted to Mojito's as one is never enough. Kangaroo were you feeling adventurous lol? The food looks good and is also presented well.

Remind me not to go with you in restaurants with TV as you'd be glued to the screen.

You are right, one mojito is never enough, but we were guests, you can't just have 5 or 6. You need to behave.

Kangaroo were you feeling adventurous lol?

Why not? 😆

The food looks good and is also presented well.

I'm really glad it fits your mega fussy requirements 🤣

Soups, pikeperch, kangaroo, zebra… oh, but… I don’t know, me… cigar sauce? (I’ll pass on that... 🤣 I steer clear of cigars and all that smoke). Everything’s so exotic! Mojito! It’s the only thing I’ve actually tasted… A toast to you and to the birthday person. I’m speechless—everything looks absolutely delicious…

Sometimes I'm wondering if you're mocking me or just trying to be funny. I hope it's the latter.

Thanks for the toast. Everything was really delicious and the place is absolutely amazing.

Good morning, Erikah. 😞 Why do you feel that way? First of all, I don't go around mocking people. It's just that we don't eat those things around here and it shocked me. I laughed about the cigarette because I imagined lots of cigarettes and I actually quit smoking a long time ago... But anyway... I apologise if my comments come across that way.
I thought you knew that I held you in high esteem.

Written text most of the time doesn't come across as speech, so I may be wrong, but I'm glad to be wrong in this case. Thank you for clarifying this.

I understand these dishes are not familiar to you or common in your country. These are not common here either as we don't have zebras and kangaroos running around free. These are considered delicatesse in my country and cost 3 - 4 times a normal dish, we don't eat it every day, but we only live once, so I thought why not taste it.

These are considered delicatesse

That's what I thought. And I didn't tell you, but I also thought they must be expensive.

Yes, you're right about the written language. I'll keep that in mind for the future and learn from this. Thank you. But keep in mind that I just celebrated my third anniversary here, and we've been communicating in a very friendly manner since I arrived... So I don't think you should entertain that idea.

I hope you have a lovely day. I have to run some errands and have a long walk ahead of me. 🤗

So I don't think you should entertain that idea.

I was hoping this is the case, but I wanted to be sure. I'm glad we clarified it. Thank you!

Have a lovely day! 🤗
