Tomas Terry Theater: A jewel of Cuban architecture.

Hello friends, the architecture of my city, Cienfuegos, has enjoyed prestige since its center was declared a World Heritage Site. Today I'll show you one of its emblematic buildings.

The Tomás Terry Theater is one of the three jewels of Cuban theater architecture, along with the theaters La Caridad de Santa Clara and El Sauto in the city of Matanzas. Located in the historic center of Cienfuegos, a World Heritage Site.

The portico of the theater's main façade features three mosaics from the Venetian house of Salviati, allegorical to the muse of tragedy, comedy, and music. They are one of the few existing examples in Cuba of the influence of Byzantine art.

Its typology is related to the so-called Italian coliseum. Developed in a horseshoe-shaped hall with four levels and a stalls, it is a stage where various artistic figures, such as Enrico Caruso, have performed.

Its structure is complemented by a false plaster ceiling and canvas stretchers in the main hall. Several oil paintings feature a central motif of 23 allegorical figures of dawn, laughter, crying, portraits of the poet Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, the musician Gaspar de Villate, and other floral motifs, as part of a panel of great pictorial value.

The murals that adorn the walls and ceilings of the installation belong to the Filipino-Madrid artist Camilo Selaya, who lived in Havana and was also the designer of the La Caridad Theater in Santa Clara.

The Terry Theater is a true architectonic marvel of Cienfuegos. There are thousands of things to be said about it. For example, the stage is ever so slightly sloped towards the public, that makes it extra hard for the performers but makes the performance slightly more visible for the public in general. Thank you for bringing us a little bit closer to this wonder.
