Less is more: when simplicity is sophistication.

Before I begin, I must say three things that are fundamental for the development of this post, friends, and that is that on the one hand I am a mature woman, 51 years old; on the other hand, I live in one of the hottest cities in Venezuela, Cumaná, where the temperature ranges between 28° and 32°C; and finally, my most common way of getting around is through public transportation.

Having clarified these three points, let's talk about my relationship with makeup.

I've never been one to overdo my makeup: a little lipstick, some eyeliner and that's it. I remember when I was young, I would borrow my mom's lipstick when I had a party and sometimes it was even my mom who did my makeup: she would put some blush on me because I was a very pale teenager and she would give a little color to my lips with a terracotta lipstick from the Mon Reve brand (I remember the color and the brand).

As before, I wear little makeup and if I have to use a product I don't own, such as eye shadows, mascara or eyeliner , I usually ask my niece, who always bails me out in those matters. Although I know I should buy my own beauty products, I also know that it would be a waste to buy products that I will only use once or twice a year, since the products usually have an expiration date.

I have also discovered a lipstick, similar to a tint, with a light texture, which is not only for the lips, but also as a blush and I can even use it as a shadow. This lipstick or tint has a permanent effect, which is ideal because I don't have to touch it up all the time and it doesn't wear off as quickly as other lipsticks. Nowadays, there are many products on the market that do double and even triple duty when it comes to make-up. You just have to search and be creative.

As I said at the beginning, I live in a city where it's hot 24 hours a day and I don't have my own car, so my makeup is basic: I don't use foundation, blender or powder, as I would probably look like a melted ice cream in the middle of the desert. Likewise, at my age, I have learned to make the most of my face with more natural and easy techniques, such as a good tan and a genuine smile.

We live in a society saturated with excess. Young women, almost girls, cover their faces with layers and layers of makeup, to hide, to refine, to design their face again. The hype is that it is never enough. The more makeup we have, the better. The more you look like you're wearing “a filter” to hide imperfections, the more beautiful you look. I would love to see naturalness become an aesthetic value and authenticity become fashionable.

Yesterday I threw away all the make-up I had. Eyeshadows, glosses, mascara, those eyelash things... they were 4 years out of date. I never use any of that stuff. Just a bit of ‘something’ for my lips, so they don't dry out, if it's transparent it's better... and sometimes I use a pencil to line my eyes.

A hug. I came to know a little bit about you, mature woman ;)

I know that a beautiful woman like you does not need such artifices! Your smile is enough to illuminate your face. A hug from this mature woman, for your adolescent self. hahahaa

"a society saturated with excess" - que tienes razon. Claro. I don't even think it's simply related to the heat, or our daily activities. To me, growing up, a little eyeliner and maybe a bit of lipstick always qualified as make-up. Everything else that women are now doing, the foundation, the shadow, it's all so excessive. I meet with friends who, like me, are in their mid 20s, and after talking to them a bit, I realize I can't actually see their face because it's under several layers of foundation and powder. It's frightening. I relate (as I do with most of your posts!) <3 You are such a beautiful person. Thank you for sharing with us this lovely meditation.

What more beauty than your youth! I don't understand how such young girls wear so much makeup. I hope it's for fashion and not for lack of self-esteem. I also think that all this fashion with makeup is because of social media, the Kardashian's and the amount of ego that is loose in our society. Thanks for your comment, bella!!! A hug

I have never been a fan of makeup. It hides natural beauty, but if women use makeup to make themselves feel more confident then I can't say anything against it.

But personally speaking, too many women go overboard and you think what are they hiding🤣
A big makeup free hug Nancy :)

Hahahaha. That's why I was saying my age, Ed! It's justified for a mature woman to start worrying about age spots and wrinkles, and put a mask of makeup on top, but a girl in her 20's what “flaws” can she have. Pure insecurity! And insecurity doesn't wear makeup!!! A hug back without makeup so you don't mess up your shirt.😎
